Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a new tractor and I'm looking at the M as a strong contender. I've been looking at a few Deere models too but I figured I'd do better to ask about the M5140 here. I sat on a couple today and I gotta say I'm very impressed. I have a few questions though. Does the 5140 come standard with the extendable lower links on the 3pt hitch? Is the emissions equipment a big deal vs the older 5040? I know on the diesel pickups it was alot of talk about the DPF and EGR a few years back and I bought one of the last '07 models just to avoid the extra emissions equipment. I was quoted 35900 plus tax for a 5140 with cab, loader and hydro shuttle. The same tractor minus cab was around 6000-6500 cheaper. Is this a good price?? I think an extra 10hp was around 1500 or so. He also has a m5040 in stock, obviously its been sitting there awhile though- the orange paint has faded badly already. Is this a tractor more desirable vs the new 5140? thanks for the help guys, I'm tryin to whittle my tractor list down a bit.

its a great tractor, it hits a niche that may other companies don't address well. It does come with extendable links. The emissions stuff on this model are not a big deal, its the larger machines where we have common rail fuel, EGR, DEF, etc. Not this size (yet). I'd take a look at that old 5040 if you can get a good price on it. Don't worry about the paint, that cleans up really easily with a good wash and wax.

Good deal, hopefully they'll still have the 5040 when I'm ready to move. Maybe the oxidized paint will scare others away from it!

I am looking for the M5140 at a good price. Can you tell me what dealer quoted you $35900:thumbsup:? The price in Arkansas seems to be a bit higher so it would be worth the drive.

I really like those tractors. Which transmission do you have?
I came close to convincing myself to just put a loader on my b7100 and call it good for awhile. But I have enough trouble keeping it running cool with this Louisiana heat, I'm sure the extra weight of a loader wouldn't help. I'm really thinking a hydraulic reverser will be better than a sync shuttle like on the 5e Deere for my use anyway. Those M Kubotas seem pretty hard to beat for the money.

We replaced our synch shuttle Case CX80 with a hydro shuttle on the M8540 and love it. For some it won't be a big deal, but we do a lot of direction changes and are a lot less tired at the end of the day.

Yeah the hydro shuttle is a feature I'd really like to have. The more I'm getting to know my property the less shifting I think I want to do. I still like the idea of gears over a regular hydrostatic for putting a little more to the ground, and the reverser I think would come in handy. I guess you have to decide the best balance for what you'll do most. One thing about it though, I'm keeping my b7100 HST for the hard to get spots for "cutting in". My new big tractor will mow the bigger swaths with a 6-7' shredder and really won't be so much back and forth. But with the loader the gears will be more rowing. Idk, maybe the mx4700 or 5100 hydro will be as close to a do it all machine as I'll find. Or a m5040 hydro shuttle...

I believe the only difference between the manual and hydro shuttle is you got push in the clutch!!

/ M5140 questions #13
the hydro shuttle difference is more than just manually engaging the clutch. it has a different (wet) clutch pack that (according to K) will outlast the conventional ceramic clutch of the manual shuttle. but when used properly, either system could outlast the operator. personally, you are on the right track with M series either way. i've never looked back trading in my L series model for the superior M. (the hydro may retain it's value slightly more)

He was talking about having to do less shifting, only reason I made the comment!!!

Ok I guess I'm thinking the hydro shuttle is similar to the Deere power reverser where you don't have to clutch between direction changes. It must be different though?

I just didnt get it cause I have my 2yr old in my cab tractor with me most of the time and he stays in the tractor when I get out to open gates it does have a guard so you dont accidently bump it getting off but I can just see him grabbing it!!!It was just a desiding factor for me,other people mite think different.

I may have misunderstood your post. You don't have to use the foot clutch on the Hydraulic Shuttle Shift, movement of the lever engages the clutch.

No that's what I was thinking, sorry I got confused.

Hey gotta question, can you go from 1st to 2nd(the gears),without using the foot clutch(Hyd.shuttle)?

Yes, my left leg is partially paralyzed and I have to use my right foot on the foot clutch, so sometimes I use the Hydraulic Shuttle Shift to change gears instead of the foot clutch. You simply put the lever in the middle of its arc which activates the clutch. I rode motorcycles most of my life and "clutching" with my hand is not awkward and is as fast as using the foot clutch.

For most people though I doubt there is any advantage to doing it this way, but perhaps I misunderstood your question.
