The L5030 actually weighs 4090#, the M5040 weighs 3968#.

Ooops!! I caught my own mistake. When I was looking at the L5030 that was the cab model. The L5030, non-cab model, actually weighs about 3700 pounds. So if you compare ROPS to ROPS it doesn't look like there is a Grand L tractor that weighs more than an Mxx40.

But I do know that the M5040 - M7040 all have the same body dimensions. The 5040 weighs 3968# and the 7040 weighs 4608#. A lot of that may be slightly bigger displacement, limited slip front differential, and especially those cast wheels.

Now comparing the Mx040 series to the L5030. The M tractors are 10" longer, 6" wider, 2" taller, with a wb of 6" more.

I just wanted to clarify that little mistake of mine. I didn't want there to be false data floating around out there due to my fault.

Your only obligation at this point is pictures! I just got in from a few hours of bush-hogging 6-7 acres we recently bought and it was wonderful seat-time. All this agonizing is keeping you from having the real fun - go get the M, and post pix!

m7040--Thanks for posting the pic of your snowplow. That photo should go in Kwik Way's brochure. Very nice and professional looking. But I'm assuming that wasn't taken recently. Something tells me that the grass in Maryland is not still that green. I don't know why there's not a way to post pics on personal messages. I'll add that to my list of possible implements, along with the 10 or 12 others!

I talked to my dealer today. He said he located an M7040HD in Lexington. Just hasn't had time to go down and get it yet. Too bad Monday's a holiday. So close, but yet so far!

Chuck, one last thing, and maybe you are already going to do this and I've just missed it, GET ALL OF YOUR REMOTES AT TIME OF PURCHASE! 3 for the rear, and an electric button controlled one on the loader for that grapple & or snow plow. You will thank all of us that have suggested this when the need arises, and it will.

That's the plan man. That's what's gonna make it take a little longer than Tuesday. The loader will need to be changed to one with the self-leveling hydraulic valve; canopy and lights will need to be added; 3rd function remote added to FEL, etc. So don't think that come Tuesday I'll be posting pics here immediately. It's got two rear remotes, he said he could put on 3. I think the cost for another rear remote was about $540. I still don't know when I would NEED 3 rear remotes unless I hooked up a top 'n' tilt and used it with a box blade with hydraulic scarifiers. So I'll probably just stick with 2 rear remotes for now. It CAN be added later should the need arise.

If I recall, I was the first to say it wouldn't be too much and just figured that I'd be flamed for saying so when everyone else had advised smaller. (maybe subconsciously that's why I'm bothering to read all the posts since)

So, what size is the baby gonna be?

Great statement - reminderd me of what a teacher told us years ago - "When you design something to be foolproof - you just give rise to a new class of fools". The Darwin Award helps, but not enough.

Dargo, it seems most have stopped advocating a smaller tractor. I don't know if that's because I posted some of my planned tasks or if they just didn't want to cause me too much psychological distress. I would recommend going back and reading it. There is some very good stuff in there. And I'm not just saying that because it's my thread either.

So, what's the baby gonn be? Looks like an M7040HD with LA1153 FEL. And my dealer located one down in Lexington but hasn't gone to get it yet. This holiday weekend may be the end of me!

Yeah, me too, why would I need more than 2 rear remotes? You only need 2 for the top 'n' tilt right? After all,

I will NEVER get a box scraper with hydraulic engaged rippers.
I will NEVER get a rear blade with hydraulic operated anything.
I will NEVER get a bat wing mower. If I do, I will just use 1 of my dedicated T'n'T hook ups.

After all I have all the time in the world. I won't get tired of getting on & off the tractor every few minutes, it will be good for me.
After all, I'm getting younger.

Yep, I agree, save $540 now while you can, because after you get your M7040, you won't believe the money you'll want to spend on more implements that you haven't even thought about yet. But then you could get by with the few that you start out with, no problem, after all you don't really need that grapple, or snow plow, or snow blower.

Check out these photos of a modified M5040 with turf tires. I really looks kind of stupud, IMHO. It's very strange looking to say the least. From the looks of the house I suppose it belongs to someone who wanted the ultimate lawnmower. Actually, come to think of it, it probably belongs to the grounds crew of a golf course. THAT would make sense.

Good Advice I think from MtViewRanch. My tractor came standard with one set of rear remotes, I have wished often for 2 and 3 would be ideal. I was looking at a snow plow yesterday that had two hudraulic cylinders on it and was thinking to myself that I couldn't use it even if I had the money to buy it, at least not the way it was meant to be used.

I think the "Porsche" argument point may have had something to do with it. No question you could do the work you have planned with a big L series (maybe not the 15ft batwing if that ever happens) but as you pointed out, there is the happiness factor to be considered in addition to the technical capabilities of the tractors. The only task that seemed a challenge for a CUT was the idea of trying to mow all 16 acres every two weeks in a reasonable time. 16 acres is a lot of lawn. I wouldn't think real pastures need mowing quite that often.

Well, it's not a lawn. Most of my sixteen acres, except for right around the house, is old horse pasture. We built the house on pasture 3 years ago. The problem is, I don't have horses to keep it under control. For some reason, I don't know if it's the water table or what, but the pasture grows extremely quickly. I have had someone mow it with a JD and a 20ft batwing the past three years. They do it every four weeks. By the time the 3rd week comes around it looks like a jungle. Then when it's cut it doesn't look that good because it had gotten so tall. I'd like to keep it cut well, kill off all the weeds, overseed it, and fertilize it so that it eventually becomes a nice green pasture. That way, if there's no weeds, it could grow waist high but not look like a jungle.
