LX3310 Exhaust Smell

/ LX3310 Exhaust Smell #21
Hi, thanks, It's not coolant, the level has not changed and I've encountered that issue before. What's odd is that it happens immediately even on a cold engine. The exhaust pipe is not even warm. Start up after sitting 24 hours, immediate smell then as long as it runs. Hopefully it will get better over time. thanks

..or you become immune to the stink.....:)

Re: LX3310 Exhaust Smell, Eyes and Sinus Burn

Is it possible that being a new machine the dealer used some type of fuel additive that is creating the smell?

Can you go the the dealership and have them start/run a model just like yours and see if it bothers you? My initial thoughts are that it may be the paint on the new tractor burning off the exhaust.

Agreed, but 7 hours?

Probably not.

It does not take much.

SDT

Agree with you, and also, with only 7 hours I bet the tractor hasn't even been worked too hard or gotten super hot. These new systems really need to be worked hard and run hot to reach normal operating conditions.

That is the best idea I've seen so far.

It's not paint. I can go out in the morning and start the tractor and immediately smell it, I can grab the exhaust pipe and it's not even warm yet. Unfortunately my local dealer won't have a LX3310 until ~!February. thanks

Well it pretty much has to be the products of combustion in the specific mechanism of that particular engine. One leans toward the assumption that it has to do with "newer emission controls" but that is at best a good guess. You are surely in the right forum to get feedback but should also try the Orange forum if you have not.

Circling back, the tractor went through it’s first regen this week, smell now seems to be gone. Thanks.....

I'm glad your exhaust stink cleared up,
my pickup is the same way and it has not gotten better.
I can't even leave it idling to get something out of it.
If I back into the shop or garage to load or unload the fumes are terrible, never had a diesel stink like this before.

My lx3310 has 16 hours on it and I'm experiencing this as well. This may be normal for this model, but I have a hard time believing it is typical to DPF tractors, it is quite toxic and visible.

It intermittently occurs, with increasing frequency. It emits white smoke and the exhaust if very toxic. It seems as if it's non-combusted diesel and occurs at all engine RPMs and temperatures. The tractor just completed it's first regen and it seems to be becoming more frequent. I'll post a link to the video of the smoke when I hit 3 posts.

I'm looking for someone with more experience with Kubota Tier 4 tractors to validate whether this is typical or atypical.

Thanks in advance.

This would be 100% atypical from my experience with a Tier 4 L4060. From zero to 450 hours I have never noticed any exhaust odors between, or during regens.
I will say that the complete lack of exhaust odors and smoke really weirded me out after many years of operating pre emission diesel tractors.

Thanks, my experience with new trucks DPF/DEF has been very positive and I'm enjoyed the lack of diesel smell. This is one of the reasons I went 3310 vs 2610, I assumed with the DPF it would emit less soot and therefore diesel odor. I'll let it play out awhile longer and continue to work with my dealer. It doesn't seem to working itself out through break in.

The smell issue I originally had was not like a regular diesel smell, it was very acrid. It happened immediately upon start up even when the tractor and all exhaust pipes, etc. were cold. It literally made my eyes water and sinuses burn, and I have never had that issue with any other diesel tractor. It appears to have cleared up considerably now that I have over 20 hours on the tractor and it went through its first regen at 18 hours. And the smoke, mine actually smoked a little 1 time in the first 18 hours and it was 10 minutes before it went into the first regen, and has not smoked since.

Re: LX3310 Exhaust Smell, Eyes and Sinus Burn

For future worries, sometimes during regen it will pump lots of fuel into the cyls to get the dpf good and hot, over fueling, lots of white smoke, but its normal and doesnt occur on all regen cycles.

I also have a lx3310 and have the same unusual odors. This is my third kubota and is different than the rest.

Re: LX3310 Exhaust Smell, Eyes and Sinus Burn

Its all normal guys, I run mine in my pole barn for a few minutes till hst warms a bit, it is much cleaner than a non emissions diesel, but i would rather be with out that garbage.
