I just got a JD 71 planter and am in the process of setting it up. I finally found a grease zerk for the main bearing under the hopper. And it is hidden, you have to tilt the hopper back and advance the drive until the zerk appears through a hole. Seems like there should be a way to lubricate the drive wheel.

Anybody have lub tips?

I have no tips, but did look at my manual and the only lubrication spot you have already found. There is another zerk in that same area on drive gear. If you found the other I'm sure you got the easy one.

There is a note to lube the drive chain with SAE 10 wt. I would imagine something lighter like WD-40 might not collect dust and dirt like the 10 wt oil. We always used kerosene or diesel on our motorcycle dirt bike chains.

Note also suggests to grease furrow openers with grease before storage. That is just a rust preventive attempt.

Spray the chain with chain lube. Run graphite in with your seed to lube the seed wheel and grease your one zerk and you are good to go. Park it where the disks are not sitting in the soil. The KY intesnse is great on the discs!

Hey, I have seen the TV commericials for that KY intense. Stick a tube of that in your pocket and head for the barn. You may get convicted on circumstantial evidence.
