oh I totally understand! When I was a young adult, I went into the firewood cutting business with a friend of mine, an older guy at our church. He told everyone he didn't need a splitter, he had me.

I'm not a young adult anymore....LOL When we had our fireplace, I had a 27 ton pull behind splitter, but since all we do is camp fire wood now, I sold it and used the money for other toys :laughing:

A table is a huge advantage. And it痴 better putting the wedge at the end of the beam so it pushes the split piece off the end. View attachment 576993

yeah the ones that push the wood through the wedge instead of the wedge through the wood are better, but, most of them are made to stand up as well, and that won't work for vertical splitting

Just a suggestion. You don't need to have the tractor revving so high. That will just cause the clutch and throw out bearing to wear quite fast. Shuttle tractors can pretty much do what you did in the video in idle or just above idle.

yes I saw that, it still wouldn't split wood in a vertical position though :thumbsup: which is what I was talking about. I understand the log lift means it doesn't HAVE to go to vertical position, I was merely commenting that most of the ones manufactured today are set up to be used either way, which is why they make them push the wedge through the wood

Splitting wood vertically sucks. It’s harder to work sitting on a bucket or worse kneeling on the ground. And you have to handle the wood 1 more time.

absolutely agree. unless you have that lift though, sometimes it can't be done horizontally though. I usually tried to avoid anything too big to pick up and put on it horizontally. If it was that big, I'd try to split it in half or thirds, something I could handle for horizontal splitting.

Watching the movie; that boy needs some instructions on handling a chain saw. Always put the saw against the log and let the saw do the work. That's a pretty big saw for cutting the stuff he was cutting. I always had a small and a bigger saw when making firewood. Saves my back.

I agree. Not using the grabs/teeth on the saw slows down the cut by a lot and makes for a lot more work on the operator. I’ve used saws with bent grabs and it’s a awful experience. Sometimes I can logs in a pile which requires pulling the bar out of the cut which adds a lot of work. I’ve nearly abandoned the practice it’s so much harder. Not so much on the size. My small saw is 50 cc which is comparable to what he had. I’ve had some 35cc saws and I don’t care much for them.

You'd save yourself some work with a set of pallet forks. Buck the trees where you fall them into 8-10' lengths, move several at a time to where you're doing your splitting and stacking....just hold the up on the forks and do your cutting into firewood length. Eliminates loading rounds into bucket, and the use of the log jack deal.

Also, you may find what I did....tractor mounted splitter is wasteful to use 30-40hp to run a splitter instead of 8hp....and the pump on a tractor really isn't meant for a splitter.....much slower. And having that on the back of the tractor like a scorpion tail is often unhandy. I converted mine to a stand alone unit with a Honda engine/16gpm 2 stage pump.
