My original thread posted in another forum but may it should be in this forum.

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...023h-ignition-switch-problem.html#post4268373

The tractor is 6 months into warrenty with less than 80 hours. I recently got it back from the dealer in Seguin, TX.

I had it in for warrenty work because the muffler broke off between the exhaust flange at the manifold and the muffler. While there I had them perform a 50 hour service.

This ignition problem should be easy to diagnose but I am having a hard time with it.

Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Have you checked the wires for looseness? Check battery terminals, red wires to starter and solenoid. Loose ground wire at the frame.
If not loose wires this should be a warranty issue.

Thanks for the reply davesl708. You are dead on with battery terminal. I was slow getting there. As usual I had to take the long way around to find a solution to my porblem.

I called the dealer to ask if they could check the ignition switch if I brought it in. He could but first I should clean the three ground locations. I made all terminals to the grounds bright and sparkling. As I worked my way to the battery I thought I may as well clean the neg batt cable at the batt post. These tractors have a factory plastic cap that when I flipped it up it caused the batt cable connector to lift right off the batt post. :) So much for my testing voltage with my batt tester. Ended up cleaning both batt posts and connectors.

Next I turned on the ignition switch and all was ok again with electrical system. However, the engine would not start in like it was out of gas.

When this whole event started the engine died like it had run out of gas, then when I tried to start it up the electrical system was dead leading me to think the engine dying was due to faulty electrical.

Now I think bad fuel gauge so I manually check fuel tank for fuel......empty. I am thinking what is going here when it hits me. In a dyslexic state for two days I had been think I had 3/4 tank of gas and all the while it was approaching empty. So I get gas and try to start again but no. Wait, I bet the fuel line will need to be bled.

Now having bled the fuel line the tractor starts right up and runs great.

In looking back when the tractor ran out of gas it caused the engine to run rough like in vibrate real hard. The vibration was just enough to cause the neg batt clamp to lose contact.

Wow, what a trip.

I hope you didn't get gas to fill it with instead of diesel.

I imagine running with gas creates a whole new set of problems but haven't actually seen it happen. Around here (in the Northeast) this time of year seems to cause problems with battery terminals and moisture. I seem to have a problem similar to Texas Cedar every year on one piece of equipment or another. I also never seem to learn to check the terminals first and go through some convoluted process to get there.

I think most of us have....."Been there, done that"....

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed the story and a very good lesson on the very first things to check when your equipment malfunctions (won't start).

Good to here you got it fixed. Get you a can of battery terminal corrosion spray and spray each terminal and every where you cleaned for grounds. Reapply every time you take it apart or yearly. Won't help with loose wires but will stop corrosion and rust.

What a great idea and thanks for posting. I hadn't thought of this.

I have battery cleaner and battery post anti-corrosion spray I use several times a year when I clean and add water to the golf cart batteries.

I'll spray the battery posts and grounds on the tractor first thing this morning.
