Ls engine issue?

/ Ls engine issue? #81
Based on diagnosis dealer gave me I'm guessing turbo contaminated dpf causing regen cycle to clear dpf. Surmising regen was result of turbo failure not the cause. New dpf due in this week so hopefully I'll have tractor back by weekend. Still very concerned about an engine with 5.3 qt oil capacity with filter being 4 quarts liw on oil in 15 minutes

I'm wouldn't be surprised a bit, high oil pressure pushed a turbo seal out and pumped oil either thru the engine or directly into the exhaust plugging up the dpf and starting a regen because of the differential pressure in the plugging up dpf.

Bulletin specifies using LS EST to program to latest software level so I assume LS dealer would have access to the update as well.

Thanks for filling us all in. Are you able to post the contents of the bulletin here? I tried searching for it but couldn't find anything......

Still surprises me that 5w is not thin enough so they have to go to 0w and adjust the software to compensate. That's living on the edge (design) if you ask me.

Not sure if service bulletin is meant to be publicly circulated. I'll check when I get the tractor back and if it's okay with dealer I'll post it here. Pretty much just says exactly what I alerted everyone to regarding dates. Dealer cut oil filter open and normal break-in material inside filter characteristic for 26 hours. Oil sample submitted for analysis and results not back yet. I'm sure this event has worn my engine prematurely and plan to change oil again after 20-30 hours and have a second oil analysis performed for my peace of mind. Other than that I'm not sure what other options I have but cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Excellent info.

Thank you!

Thank you Rusty. I printed it off. I will take it to my dealer and see if he (or a technician) can come out to update my ECU.
No issues with my machine yet, but if this update helps, I would rather prevent this issue from ever being an issue. Thank you!

I wonder what the program commands for the initial start up rpm?

Looks like it delays "operator control" of throttle from 3-60 seconds after startup depending upon coolant and outside temp. Interesting to note, a frost plug heater may fool the computer to force the minimum 3 second delay.

So, again, this is an initial start up issue. Good info on diagnosing turbocharger also. I may have to pull the intake to inspect. I've only had one regen over 25 hours thus far (180 hrs on tractor).

So FWIW, I contacted the service manager at the local (Spokane) LS dealer-walked him through the NH Advice Bulletin information-while we spoke he logged on to the LS dealer/service network and found nothing from LS ( yet) regarding this issue on LS badged tractors.

I also reached out to LS North America and will post what, if anything, they respond with.

The Spokane service manager did suggest he could read the ECU off my machine when I bring it in and tell me which rev level it is at ( checking against the NH rev level provided in the Advice)-maybe by then LS will have provided details on LS badged machines with the 1.9L turbo.

I plan on changing the oil before next start up and will go with 5w-40 synthetic as it will be my 50 hour service.

A further update-reached out to the service manager at the dealer where I bought my XR4155HC-he confirmed that there is nothing from LS for LS badged 1.9l turbos. He did note that while the basic engines in the NH and LS are the same they are spec’d differently so it is possible that the turbo ( and even the ECU software) are different.

Results of oil sample were within normal ranges. Crossing my fingers and will do another oil analysis at fall/50 hour service to compare the results.

The one thing that doesn't make sense is the diagnosis of oil present at the compressor inlet. I say this because the CCV vents into the inlet pipe and creates quite a mess with oil. So you will see oil present and it's not a turbo failure.

You can plumb and oil to air filter to alleviate the oil coating your intake.

That looks like oil for a gas engine. Mobile 1 makes 0w-40 for diesel engines.

Thanks. I saw that oil but it looks like it's more for Euro cars/trucks. Do Europeans even have trucks?

In any case, I had trouble finding it for sale in the US. I think, if I ever need it, I'll use the T6. Rotella is an excellent oil. Actually, a lot of them are.

Thanks again. :)
