A certify refrigeration service man is need to remove all freon from any A/C units,even auto's before going to the dump or junk yards,for that R12 freon is nasty stuff /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif and the main reason R22 freon has replace it.

Heck road side dumping happening everywhere now a days...tires mostly around here. /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif

Far as the highway sign goes I'm sure the crew was just following orders,but I do agree for I too have seen this action around here... money not well spent...mostly at the Ivy school where I work. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Alan,
when you've got lemons ... make lemonade. If you've somewhere that old worthless fridge can sit ... they can be tremendously useful. Since they usually still have pretty good seals, you can use it for sorage of:
- welding rods that need to be kept out of the humidty
- paint and other freezables in the winter (put in a 60 watt lightbulb and an overtemp switch and you're all set to keep them above freezing)
- light-sensitive stuff
- chemicals and other sensitive stuff (just bolt in a hasp and padlock it)

if you can't easily dispose ... think reuse!

If you decide to use it for storage outside and there are any kids in the area I'd humbly suggest a lock on it as kids have been known to use them to hide in. Actually an air tight box I don't think would be good for storing stuff as a sheltered spot as all kinds of good things grow in a sealed environment. Welding rod is too important to store like that, it belongs under the bed with the other important stuff.

The picture of Aunt Matilda that your wife is storing under the bed can be put in the refrigerator!

The changes that the Supreme Court made recently will change the land use laws that a lot of states passed. The Supreme Court ruled that if you rezoned etc. a piece of land the government had to compensate you for the devaluation of your property.

Actually my refrigerators have been laying out in the weather maybe 15 years, so they're really just rust. In fact I have one I can't get out of the ditch because it comes apart when I pull on it with the tractor. I'd be surprise if those things have any freon in them since they are so rusty.

Just to give a little lighter side to all of this. When I had cleared the property we are on now a few years ago my grandpa was out here visiting. I think he was 83 at the time. Well I had about six huge piles left, I mean we're talking house size piles, from when I cleared the ground. It was all mostly green trees and I was having a heck of a time getting them started to burn. Well when I was at work one day my grandpa went over there and started those piles on fire. Not one but all six! Now he lives out in southern Idaho on 40,000 acres so he doesn't ever think much about anyone else or that he has to ask to do something. Well you have to have a permit here too and you have to burn a reasonable amount that you can reasonably control. Well he had what looked like a forest fire going!!! I was driving home, we didn't live there then and saw that and stopped. I walked down there and my one neighbor friend, who's a farmer, was down there with him. I said Grandpa you can't burn all that at once here, this isn't Idaho. My neighbor, Ivan, said yea I told him to take it easy on the burning but he just said if they came down here he'd just tell them he was from Idaho and just stopped to see what was going on and he was going to just go up and get in his car and drive home! He's a great guy and no nonsense approach to everything. At coffee the guys still talk about Grandpa and his burning escapades!!!

When I moved here it was a little more "subrural" (my word) then it is now, most of the lots are 5-10 acres. The neighbor came over (who turned out to be a great old Minnesota guy) The first thing he said to me was "Your're not one of those city SOB's that calls the cops everytime someone starts an engine are you?"

I wanted to say "No, noise doesn't bother me I have a rock band" (I don't) but I bit my tongue instead. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline and repairs heavy equipment. He was a gift. He used to say my Ford NH was designed for loading onions at the processing plant, and that the backhoe was for loading marshmellows on to a conveyor belt!

That was of course before he improved the loader and backhoe. If the tractor was ever hit with a bomb, the tractor would be gone, but the 4-post canopy, loader and backhoe would remain intact.

I know that some regulations need to be in place to stop the aggregious violators, but the government finds it easy and pleasant to draw wide lines on the map and cover ANYBODY doing ANYTHING. Nice and Quick.

Is your grandfather still alive? I'd go move next door to him if I were you. Time passes to quickly, there'll be plenty of time "later" to work etc.

Yes he's still alive. My grandma passed away last year of cancer but they came out 7 or 8 times a year to see us. My grandpa still runs his ranch and rides almost every day. Just this last fall he went hunting up in northern Idaho and bagged a moose and elk. He's quite a guy at 86. I just hope I'm in half his shape and know a tenth of what he does when I'm that old. He's doesn't come out as much now but he stays longer so I guess it evens out. He couldn't give a heck less about the government and their regulations, he just does what he wants. But you're talking about a man that took 40,000 acres of southern idaho desert and made it into prime cattle grazing and farm ground. So the government trying to tell him how to do things is a bit far fetched.

I guess here in NC we have it pretty good in comparison to the Left Coast.

There are some burn rules/regs/laws around here but they seem to be reasonable for the most part. A house site can burn pretty much when they want. A land owner with no house has more rules to follow. The assumption and I guess its a good one is that a land owner has bigger piles to burn. The local fire marshal is the Enforcer and most of the PITA part of the rules is having 1000 feet to an occupied structure. If within that distance, then EVERYONE who is within that 1000 foot circle must signoff saying the burn is ok. Seems a bit restrictive to me.... I can understand if the burn was a everyday/week/month occurance. But it does not affect me since my burns are 1000 feet from an occupied structure and even if there was someone in the circle they would sign.

My friends on the other hand has a problem. They have a pile of timber they are going to burn that is as large as my house. AND they are close to a good 12 homes. They might have a problem..... He is an exFireFighter so he knows how to burn this since he has done it before so I'm not worried about him burning... OTH they will have a house on the site so they might be able to get through on the homeowner loop hole.

NC law on burning is fair to the landowner. The NC Wildlife magazine I get just had an article on using controled burns for timber management. If you were burning less that 50 acres you did not need a license. The state had two or three day classes to get a license if you wanted one. I would like to do a 15-20 acre burn and if we ever do it I'll take the class. There are licensed contractors to do the work but they have a two to three month waiting list.

I really don't think its an exaggeration to call the pre-and-WWII-years people our "finest generations".

Larry, the trick is to try to be the man your dad was. (I try). I've let a couple of kids sit on my Ford backhoe and dig with the backhoe idling. I surprised their faces weren't permanently distorted by having their smiles go from ear to ear.

DEL, I tried that stunt with gasoline once and almost went up in smoke myself!! I have a 25 gallon spray tank on wheels and keep it filled with diese and spray my brush piles with the diesel. It won't explode like gasoline, lots safer and burns longer and hotter!

I know some of the contractors around here are using the fans to burn the big piles.

I'm trying the poor man fan myself. I dug out a stump where I'll be burning for the next year or two. I built a ramp into the hole with the FEL and put the spoil aside to use later on to smother the fire. I actually dug out two stumps that were close to each other but the second had a very shallow root system and I did not have to dig deep. This turned out to be a good thing I think. The wood I piling up over the hole wont fit into said dimple in the ground. The end of the wood sits a couple feet outside the hole. When I start the burn the wood will burn out in the middle and fall into the hole. I'm hoping that that the hole will concentrate the heat and make it much less painfull when I have to get near the burn to push stuff further into the pile. I'm hoping that during the first hour or so of the burn the hole will allow air to get under the fire and then sucked up into the fire from below mimiking the fan the contractor's use.

It will be awhile before I get enough wood stacked before I can try this. Today we are getting a good rain so tomorrow would be a good day to burn. But I don't have the pile I need. I have another burn pile, the biggest one I"ll do at the house site. I"m going to build the burn pile on the hole as big as the house site one to see what happens. My house site pile does not have road access so if it goes out of control it will be harder for the FD to get at it. My fire hole is right on my road so the FD could just drive up and barely unroll a hose.

I noticed the pile I burnt a couple weeks back had very little smoke. Those leaves are a whole new ball game. I was driving through town last fall and someone was burning a pile. There was a temp inversion and a good part of the town was smothered in smoke from a single leave burn. It was unreal. But since he was a homeowner he could do the burn. Go figure.....

The county had a bad bunch of wildfires last weekend for some reason. Well, the reason is the people were stupid. Today is the first rain in about 10 days and a wind had kicked up on Saturday so the people were nuts to be burning. I wait for the day or so after a good rain. And no wind....

I have to be careful with burns because the State Ranger for the county has an office about a mile away from the property as the grow flies. Nice folks...

Thanks Larry,
I feel the same way about my Grandpa as you did your Dad. When I was little and people would ask me who my hero was I'd say my Grandpa. Would've liked to have said my Dad but he was killed in the army in Korea when I was 2. We lived on my grandparents ranch after that and my grandparents pretty much raised me.

Don't know why people have to burn leaves - they decompose so quickly you can mulch/compost them easily. I found the best time to burn is at dusk. Usually no or little wind at that time which is what can make things "get away" from you.
