Lost my Load!

   / Lost my Load! #11
When I was about 17 I spent a day helping helping clean up tree branches after a storm. I had my PU loaded up about 2 or three feet higher than the cab with mostly light weight stuff that we just tossed up there. I tied it all down and headed for the dump.

When I got to the dump I had about half the load I started with. I dumped all that and traced my route back to pick up whatever I had lost. Never found any of it. Don't know where I lost it and don't know who picked it up.

I had a push mower roll out of the back of my flatbed once, but the worst accident-waiting-to-happen I have ever seen was not my doings...
My wife was given a 78 Chev 1 ton truck and an 18 foot deck boat by an elderly couple last month. Truck don't run, boat has not been used in years. Also, located two hundred miles away. Well, elderly couple arranged to have friend at distant location tow them to our place. When he arrived, and made the turn into our drive the 1 ton jumped off the tow dolly and rode up over the tow dolly wheel. Seems the fellow had strapped the bumper of the truck to the hitch bar of the dolly, but never put the straps over the front wheels as they sat on the dolly platforms. He had it rigged where it could not come off backwards, but there was nothing to prevent the whole thing from going forward except the lip on the front of the wheel platforms. Did I mention that the deckboat was attached to the towed one-ton? I shudder to think of the mess if he had needed to make a sudden stop at highway speed. I asked him about the tie downs and he said they were in the back of his truck, he didn't know what they were for. Had to lift the front of the one ton with FEL to drive the tow dolly out from under it.......I am glad I had forbade the wife to go down there by herself to bring these new yard decorations home!! She and her friend had come back three days prior with a 12 KW genset on the back of her freinds flat bed, it was tied to the headache rack with a three foot piece of nylon ski rope /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifChet

For obvious reasons, could you guys post the state that you're registered to drive in and (for the sake of anonymity) the first 4 characters of of your plate numbers?

Thanks.

The only one I choose to remember ( /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) is when my dad and I picked up a used range. It fell over going down the highway. Luckily, it stayed in the truck and the glass didn't break! I did have to get some plastic pieces but didn't have to buy a whole new door.

At my job, (home center) I see amazing stuff leave everyday. The amazing part is that most of em made it home. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have lost a few things but one of the weirdest things I have seen happen was when I was about 15. A buddy of mine and I were running down I- 5 when the hood of his '62 International blew up and off. The hood must have caught a thermal because it soared up 200 feet or so and floated around for a while. I couldn't tell you how long but it was long enough for us to stop the truck, back up, get out and look around on the ground for it, look up, see it and then have a short discussion on what to do next. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Mine was a Christmas season ago. I drove out to pick up some siding to replace some damaged pieces on my pole barn. It was the last work day before the holiday and I got there just as they were closing. I'd taken a full size P/U as I wanted 8' pieces of the steel siding.

Well, as luck would have it they only had 10' lengths in stock which, to get me out the door, they would give me for the 8' price. I was going to need to cut them anyhow so trimming 3' instead of 1' didn't matter to me. They loaded them in the bed and put a spare tire and wheel on them and I got back to my office just fine.

While I was there we got hit by a blizzard with blowing snow and sleet out of nowhere. I had a guy ride out to the farm with me to help me unload these so we could both get home then. Halfway out there I stopped at a light and, when it was green my way accelerated normally and heard a huge crash behind me. The entire load had slid out in the middle of the intersection of two state highways at the interstate!

Fortunately, the guy with me got out and directed traffic around the white siding in the snow covered road until I could back up to it and we could get it reloaded. Amazingly, there was no damage to anything besides my ego. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mine is painfully recent. Father's day 2004. My father in law is on his deathbed in Corpus Christi Texas. Weeks ago I had taken his car back to Austin to have some body damage estimated. Fathers day weekend comes up. It's our turn to go take care of him till Monday. I tow his car back. His battery is dead so I have to jump it to get it running. I pull the car up on my trailer, strap it down and drive off with the Buick's engine still running to charge the battery. Left it running all the way to Corpus! Battery was fully charged when we got there. I had also taken my lawn mower as his grass was getting tall. Darn mower would only run on the gas from the priming bulb. Since the only tools there were stone knives and some bear skins, I tie the mower to the now empty trailer to haul it home to work on it. A mile into the trip a car comes along side. The people are waving and yelling about our mower. Sure enough it's gone off the trailer. The straps are still there. OOPS! I retraced the route, but it's gone. We were in the middle lane of South Padre Island Drive (S.P.I.D.) and it was very fortunate that no accidents happend.

When I was in High School, round bales weren't yet in vogue, so most summers were spent hauling little square bales of hay from the field to the barn for storage.

Lost the top two layers on a 24' flatbed at a redlight... we used more ropes to tie the loads after that. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
