Lost 4X4?

Hi Folks,



First post, technical question.

My father purchased a 2006 DK40 last Friday.......clean tractor...no signs of abuse.....~600 hours.....paint is barley scratched on the under side.


He goes on vacation so I commender the new to us rig for some clean up on my place. Piling some pine logging slash from last year with a 3pt brush piler and the bucket. Easing around on the tractor taking my time......work is slow but rather easy as the slash is dry...

Come to a medium size bush that has grown up along the side of the logging deck and go to push it over with the bucket.......second gear, light throttle...

Felt a small pop (like when you hit the shuttle with your knee and knock the tractor out of gear) and the front end stops pulling....nothing violent and the tractor wasn't in a bind. Just no 4X4......


Ideas? Thanks for any feedback.

I'm confused: the front end stopped pulling? Did the tractor stop when you tried pushing the bush over? Where did you feel the slight pop occur?
Have you checked the 4x4 switch function? Is there a blown fuse in the fuse box which controls engagement of the switch?

The tractor is the older model with the mechanical 4X4 lever. The lever goes in and out......dash light goes on/off.


The tractor stopped moving foward when the slight pop occurred because it lost traction. The ground is covered in soft rotting wood and logging slash and traction is poor. I hadn't been pushing the tractor hard at all up to that point....if I did hang up I would ease off and get another push with the piler.


Tractor worked fine after that expect the front tires won't pull......outside of some gear whine in low range (that I took as normal for a CUT) this thing ran just like new and I'd guess the tractor had spent very little time in four wheel drive in the past.

Guess something let go in the front end........pretty disappointed as we chose this tractor due to the beefy looking build......

You bought a USED tractor, without a warranty, yes?
Things break- it has 600 hours on it, yes?
Did you have someone go over it with a fine toothed comb before purchase?
Sorry it's broken, but let's be realistic, this is why people buy new- if something breaks it's under warranty; otherwise one takes a gamble on condition, etc.
See what's wrong and go from there.

It is at the shop now to be looked at...........and I understand the concept of buying used.


Still pretty disappointing though.......all the excessively hard use I've put on tractors though the years and this is the first driveline component to ever fail....while doing next to nothing.

They are not supposed to spin together. Since you were grubbing I wonder if a stick jammed the linkage causing the problem. Did you happen to crawl under and take a look at the linkage?

These tractors have an open differential, the tires will not turn each other unless in 4wd. I would start by following the linkage from the 4wd lever and making sure you didn't just bend it.

Linkage looked fine.


Pretty sure the other tire should turn in the opposite direction on an open diff unless these tractors have some type of electric front diff disconnect.

With both front wheels off the ground, rotating one tire will either cause the other tire to rotate in the opposite direction OR the drive shaft will spin, whichever has the least resistance. You have to engage the lever to hold the driveshaft still to test front diff.

That makes sense.


It did the same thing regardless of where the 4X4 lever was placed IIRC.



Hopefully it is just not engaging at the transfer case. Shop said they'd have an answer pretty soon.........

Sorry to hear your trouble Iron Hog. I can understand your dissapointment. You would think you would be safe buying at 600 hours.
My dealer always said to me... " it is 4 wheel assist, not 4 wheel drive" and I always keep that in mind when working. It is easy to get into trouble with 4x4 and I only use it if I have to. I have found in our soil that the front wheels can break through the crust on the soil and then the back ones quickly dig themselves in once that happens. I have learned to reverse home when the paddocks are real wet. lol Last time I was bogged it took 6 weeks to get her out. Hope your problem is not too serious. Let us know the outcome.

My dealer always said to me... " it is 4 wheel assist, not 4 wheel drive" and I always keep that in mind when working. It is easy to get into trouble with 4x4 and I only use it if I have to. I have found in our soil that the front wheels can break through the crust on the soil and then the back ones quickly dig themselves in once that happens. I have learned to reverse home when the paddocks are real wet. lol Last time I was bogged it took 6 weeks to get her out. Hope your problem is not too serious. Let us know the outcome.

6000 hours and older than me is normal.

Wow 600 hours. That's a shame. Hardly past break in really. That's a new machine. Friends of mine have countless hours in their tractors using them hard and in four wheel assist. Some never take them out of four wheel. I am sorry for your bad exprience. If it would have had 2000 hours one might expect that to happen.

Bogged for 6 weeks??? How in the heck did you sleep at night?

LOL I did have bad dreams.. It was the worst time too as our district was devastated by flooding and we could have helped a lot of people at the time. Worst of it was I smashed the hydraulic oil filter head off trying to get the little baby out and I wasn't up to digging out the wet slush underneath to repair it. I just had to be patient.

I run my DK40SE in 4x4 mode 80% of the time.....but only 500 hrs so far.

If you should not use four wheel assist, why not just get a 2wd. You should have been safe buying a tractor with only 600 hours. I only take mine out when I am running on the road.

Pretty anxious to find out what went wrong.


It could have been something from the factory......I don't think the tractor had been used in 4X4 much if any.....the lever was stuck in the 2WD position when we first looked at the tractor.
