I encountered this today, way back in the swamp. I've never seen this before.

I've seen some similar, not quite that distinct, when a larger tree fell and bent over a small one that didn't break, but continued growing.

The ones in the swamp growing back down..
It's hard to say with out any leaves but I was thinking it may be a hickory. They tend to grow in small groves and the bark looks like a young hichory. I'm not sure about that.
I was also thing that those may actually be roots that were uprooted by a tree and the tree died, and rotted away. Seems to me, roots will aquire bark when exposed, on some trees anyway.
