Looking for vise attachment ideas.

I was wondering about that too. That's why I was thinking that maybe you could mount the receiver on the edge for more solid support and just insert the up side down vise into the back of the receiver for storage underneath but I didn't word it very well ????

Aha... yeah flipping it over and inserting backside maybe? Definitely worth playing with... I think I have a loose receiver but it not worth buying another and give it a go this weekend. My smaller vices are currently clamped to my small work table 2ft x 4ft 1/2in plate mounted to an old salvaged Craftsman rollaway. The small vice and my ring roller are directly clamped. My medium sized vice is 'Click Bonded' to a small plate that I clamp down. This way I can move and clamp it other places and make my platform completely free of attached stuff on working surface if I want.

Here are pictures of vise and anvil. One vise base has scrap flat across the brake drum, the other has a rotor as the base covering the hole. Got the brake drums from a scrap yard, like most of my metal.

That's cheating... I just found a long piece of 2in by 1/8in and a hitch I was modifying for a different project. My problem is I don't think I have enough under table space. 11in by 24in is area to work in for concealed under mount. Dang vise is 60lbs. Not sure hanging off my table will make it too easy (top heavy) to flip my cart!

Agree. I have something similar (a vice on a 18" long section of 10" wide channel iron). Heavy enough to stay put for most things. Like yours, the vice is mounted near the channel's edge so it can overhang for clamping long work, or clamp short work over the channel's footprint for hammering. Also handy when working at floor level.

Off topic, but I use it a lot on my hydraulicly raised roll-around table. Clamp the part and then set the exact height for comfortable angle grinding, filing, pounding, etc. (a little noisy when pounding, with all that sheet metal supporting it) Without the vise on it, that adjustable height table is perfect for transferring a load out of the pickup and rolling it into the shop. Or as an extended table for table saws.

Mine was a garage sale find. The seller couldn't 'get it to work'.

It only needed the packing grease cleaned off and adjusting.

It has its limitations but is handier for forming intricate pieces than a larger machine.

I bought a couple of dozer sprockets at the local scrap yard (105lbs each) that I'm going to weld together, then weld an I-beam vertically and finish with a heavy flat plate to bolt a really big vise on. The vise is too tall to put on a normal bench, so it has to be on a dedicated bench, or stand built to the correct height. I plan to add a set of wheels on the back so I can tip it onto the wheels and roll it wherever I want. The vise is 200lbs, the stand will be at least 300lbs, so I think it's going to be pretty solid.

The local scrap yard had a bin of semi-truck brake drums that are a popular choice for a base...some folks fill them with concrete as I recall.

Here's the vise...a Wilton C3 which has 6" jaws, pipe jaws, and weighs right at 200lbs:

For stands I try to use whatever I have around. I built this one for the belt grinder I refurbished, but it could also be use for a vise.

I used 3/8" angle iron, 6" square tube, and 1/2" plate.

G ManBart you have such good luck finding GOOD heavy vises.

Nothing in my area ever seems to come up for sale. If I lived closer I would certainly purchase one of your "refurbished" ones!

Dang, that bench setup on post 9 is wild. I also like the extra jaws on that Wilton vice, pretty cool.

Yeah, there are some seriously talented fabricators showing stuff in that thread! A couple of the stands are literally artwork they're done so well!

I just got through looking at what I could without a login. I kinda like the one built out of pipe...lol. Just looks neat.

Thanks! The belt grinder is a Burr King. ( NOT to confused with Burger King ). I was fortunate that it was well built (made in USA) enough to only require a "little" loving for the resto.
