Buying Advice looking for gas tractor with loader

hi im looking for a gas powered tractor a newer one prferably. i have a 59' ford 801 right now i use it to brush hogg and pull logs with and also haul a big hay wagon. any sugestions on what i should look into i'd like an international, but would consider anything at this point i need something reliable. Non of the new tractors have gas engines and i cant put a disel tank in at my farm. your help will be apreciated -adam-

Gas? That might be a tough one. What size tractor are you looking for?

Puzzled about not using diesel on your farm. ??

I'd go diesel and haul diesel in 5 gal cans. They sip less fuel than gas engines.

An IH 454 gas would be another option, we have a 454 diesel and it's a great tractor. They were made from '73 to '75, 40 PTO hp, had a 8x4 syncro tranny, independent PTO, good draft control 3pt, real heavy tractor, would be good for a loader tractor.

the lady who owns the farm doesnt want another tank on the property. we only do light work with the tractors we have now veggi farm, and im looking for a tractor with 30-45hp something to match an ford 801.

If I recall correctly from my working days, fuel tanks 650 gallons and larger are subject to EPA regulation, which is a good thing to avoid. Personally, I buy diesel in 5 gallon cans. My Kubota L3830 can bush hog for 4 to 5 hours on 5 gallons. After that, I'm ready to quit for the day.

If you are real lucky, finding a JD 4300 or 4400 would be good. About impossible to find them on the market, as they are held onto. Getting into the same size frame and newer models look for the 3x20 series. Next size up frames would be the 4500 and the 4x20 series. One can get a lot of seat hours on 5 gal of diesel fuel a week. Much better than gas.

Lots of good reading on TBN with these sizes.

And lots of good choices to pick from, if they are available.

Same here. We are putting in a fuel tank at another location where our M8540 and MF 375 live, but here we use 5 gallon containers for our L5030 and BX2660.

Why can't you use the fuel in the tanks or tanks you all ready have in a diesel tractor ?

Easy fix--get yourself a 50-gal tank/electric pump installed in your pickup bed and use it to hold diesel for your tractor. Then find yourself a nice Massey Ferguson 135 diesel (45 hp engine, 37 hp pto)--they're plentiful and inexpensive to buy.

If you're doing daily work then by all means get a transfer tank for your truck and go diesel. My JD 5103 while brush cutting uses less than a gallon per hour. Loader work is even less. With an 18 gal tank on the tractor you can run it for quite awhile before refueling. Diesel is generally lower in operating costs also.

wouldn't be much of an upgrade but late 60's or early 70's model Ford 3000 or 4000 might work for you.

Gas tractors for major brands are hard to find. John Deere last made gas farm tractors in 1973. I have a JD 2030, rated at 60HP and it meets all my needs. JD made a 2010 (mechanic friend told me the engine in the 2010, 46HP, was one of the worst if not the worst engine ever put in a JD), and a 2020. 56 HP. The 2010 was made 1960-65. The 2020 made 1966-71; the 820 (31 HP) and 1520 (46 HP) were made 1966-71. Regardless of the brand you may purchase, if its gas and is before electronic ignition....convert it to an electronic ignition. Smoother running and you will pick up a couple additional horses. In fact if you plan to keep the Ford and have not converted to electronic ignition. Do so and it will like a "new" tractor. Can provide the source for conversion kits if need.

I agree with most of the others in that you won't use enough fuel to need a large storage tank. I use my three tractors frequently and use 5 gal cans. I could easily setup a tank on my trucks but I don't think it is worth the space they take up. Back in the day when I had gasoline tractors such as the International 460 this thing easily burned twice the fuel that my new tractor uses.

If you include diesel tractors new and used you will be able to find alot more tractors to choose from in your price range whatever that is. If the 420 tractor you are referring to is the early model that thing is over 50 years old, the problem with buying equipment that old is parts are expensive. You can put that money into parts without getting a return when you sell the tractor to trade up. Same with the 2424 or 424 these were mid 1960s' I think.

Looking at new ones I would look into a 4120 open station with 28" R1 (ag) tires with either a power reverser or ehydro transmission. This tractor with 43hp and 28" tires will have more ground clearance than the 3z20 series if that is a factor for you. This would have good hydraulics for a loader, enough weight to equal the older tractors you speak of for ground engaging work, power steering and a good 3pt hitch with position control.
