Hi

I need a long range cordless. Not some illegal import, just a high output domestic model. I've tried the Engenius, which is the highest output legal US system. They are expensive and hold up like they are. Like an old Jag. After countless repairs, mine are all spent.

Does anyone offer a decent cordless? One with pretty good range and reasonably durable? It seem like all that is available is pretty crummy or wildly over priced.

There was a topic not too long ago (maybe within 6 months?) that brought up a whole bunch of discussion on cordless phones, including the more than likely illegal ones.

Of course, if we're talking technology and 6 months time.... that discussion is more than likely already outdated /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I really don't have an answer for this one , But I do have a situation that has cropped up since the invention of the wireless routers that use the 2.4 spectrum....

When the cordless phones went from 900mhz to 2.4 ghz I bought a new 2.4ghz and the range was at least 500-600 feet from the base...Then the wireless routers came out and now with the neighbors systems I can barely get 80-100 without interference...
At least thats what I blame it on...(same time frame)

This response is not to mis-direct this post but it might be of help to someone.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yeah- the wireless routers use the same range as the 2.4 phones, now you can either get 5.8 phones or try changing channels on the router until you get the best signal possible on the 2.4 phones.

What kind of distance are you looking for. I had a Panasonic 2.4 and it has held up quite well and we have abused it banging and clanging it around. We still use it but mostly use the Motorola 5.8 (got it to avoid buying all those filters for DSL) and it has performed quite well with some really nice features. I have used it at over 660 feet from the base which was inside. We dropped the new ones quite a bit too.

Good leads, great info.

Yeah, WIFI is on the same range, and it is getting so that many of the channels are gobbled up.

I haven't tried netstumbler to see if it can show cordless phone noise...

I am looking for phones for a car lot, to work on a business phone system. we already have radios and cel, but sometimes you gotta have a phone!

What type of phone system? the manufacturer (NEC, Cisco, ATT) may have a solution. I used to work very closely w/ a local NEC dealer and they had some pretty cool wireless accessories/expansion kits for their systems.

I was looking at the little GMRS walkie talkies a while back and one brand siad you could get the software and such to make it into a cordless phone hooked to you computer. Never tried it, but sounded like a good idea that might work well.

The dedicated cordless sets are really bad. ~$600 and last through one dropping.

I ended up getting a Panasonic GigaRange set to try, based on info here... It has two handsets, and costs all of $76. The users like it 1000% better than the Engenius SN920 it replaced. It has plenty of range no interference, and get this, it is a 2.4 and is 3' from a WiFi bridge setup. I already had one, so I tried it first before getting another 2.4GHz.

The new 2.4GHz models must be WiFi aware...

What kind of range have you gotten on your Panasonic? I really need a phone in my barn and in my milkhouse, and I haven't found a cordless phone that can do it, and I only need a range of about 250 - 300 feet.
