Logsplitter Wedge, This way or That, Whats the Difference?

/ Logsplitter Wedge, This way or That, Whats the Difference? #41
I have them both ways and haven't used the splitter with the wedge on the cyl since getting the splitter with the wedge on the beam, not even one time!

I never have to chase any splits, even with a big round it splits and falls to the side, staying on the table ready to be pulled back and split again.

BUT, I have a really good 4-way wedge, and what ever needs to be re-split stays on top of the wings, so I can flip it over and off the wing back right back onto the beam and away it goes, right through the 4 way again!

The wedge on the beam is just so much faster with regular sized wood and works great with the big rounds...

If youre not chasing the split youre taking a ruf ride and walking back. Be fun to watch.

And, if you've never used my splitter, you have no idea of what you are talking about...

Do you have an automatic conveyor that brings large split pieces back in front of you?

I agree.. When you do repetitive things for long periods of time, it's a matter of time before something bad happens..

I completely disagree with you. If you pay attention ALWAYS, there is no reason to be worried. It's when you get carless that you risk problems, it doesn't matter if its the first time or the millionth, that just changes the odds but you have to start out with being carless.

Vt, I'm guessing by your reactions that you know someone who lost a body part to a splitter? While I don't see the advantage od auto-cycle or double detent on a standalone splitter I don't see them being a hazard IF you pay attention. If you are not paying attention, you have no business being around the splitter.

If everybody AlWAYS paid attention there would never be any car wrecks.

Regarding 4 way wedges, I have, conservatively split upwards of 1200 cords, and I would estimate that 20 percent of the rounds are just the right size so that quartering them gives me the right size billets.

80 percent are too small, or too big.

The small stuff just goes through the bottom and gets split once. The big stuff gets two right sized pieces taken off the bottom and two big pieces on top that you run through again. And a lot of four way wedges are set up so you can remove the cross blade anytime you want to whittle away on a block from the edges in. Watch your fingers. I do have a neighbor that crushed his right hand trying to pull a splinter out and got caught by the piston on the return stroke. A one handed carpenter has a hard time making a living. Lucky for him they pinned it all back together and he has regained about 80% use of it.

Life is full of all sorts of hazards and dangers ... and one generally does what one can to eliminate what they believe is undue risk ...

However, as with most activities in Life, there is usually some type of risk vs reward calculation going on ...

I'd agree with LD1: using a detent or auto-cycle valve isn't the most dangerous aspect of processing firewood ...

That's not to say that there isn't any danger associated with doing it, it's just that I see other dangers as being far more likely in terms of the possibility of occurrence, and potentially just as hazardous, if not even more so ...

Wanna talk danger ? ... then consider the reality of operating a motorized device which has a sharp chain - fully capable of cutting off a limb or delivering a mortal wound - while clambering around in the woods ...

In terms of the danger of detent or auto-cycle valves, my biggest concern is loosing my footing and falling into the path of the push block/wedge ...

The valve is without any intelligence or humanity whatsoever - and will shear whatever portion of your anatomy is in the way, pretty much in half ...

I can live (literally) without a finger or a hand ... but I ain't gonna make it if my torso or head gets clipped ... just the same as not making it if I cut myself in the woods with a chain saw and bleed out ...

As far as wife, children, or friends go, that's pretty easy: ain't none of them gonna be operating it ...

You have some wood you want split and wanna borrow my splitter ? ... well, it comes with an operator ... me ...

You reinforce the point of paying attention. Its ALWAYS the person being careless, distracted, speeding, impatient etc that is the cause NEVER the person paying attention and obeying the laws.

You are either super human or you haven't been on earth long enough to see what can happen while doing something that makes no sense..
