I have a 25-30 year old wood splitter works good for me except, the return detent does not hold any more. It's a cross valve, and I can't seem to find an exploded parts picture to be able to take it apart. If it's repairable, some adjustment or get a new one?

Looking at your center pic, on the left end of the valve is a grey "end" that has a "nut" on top. Not real clear in the pic, but likely there is a spring and ball that is the detent, or is an adjustment. Carefully remove it and see what is in there.

If that doesn't work, might also just pull the spool and put on new O-rings

I had a valve that the detent stopped working in. I didn't know any better so I tore it apart and found the ball had worn a groove in the shaft. I gave it a half turn and it worked fine till I replaced it with an autocycle valve.

The detent is located under the alum. Cover opposite end of the valve from the handle. Remove the Allen bolts, if you are lucky you will see possibly why it is not holding, should be pretty obvious like something worn/broken or corroded.
There should be no fluid there, so you shouldn't have to worry about loosing any.
If/when you find the problem put a little grease on the parts for lubrication. When reinstalling them.
I hope this helps.

Here's a drawing of a Cross valve of similar vintage and a splitter tips page from an owners manual for a Didier splitter. Hope it helps.
