I have a log splitter that i built 6 or 7 years ago. It has a two stage pump and a 5hp B/S engine. The splitter worked fine untill this year when on the return stroke it would not kick into neutral on the return stroke. I replaced the detent assembly and it is still the same. It would stall the motor on the return stroke if I didn't kick it out manually. I just installed a new Prince log splitter valve and it worked fine most of the day and would kick out on the return stroke. All of a sudden on the return stroke no kickout and the engine would stall out. I should say that there is plenty of force to split anything I put on the splitter.I am stumped.I have a filter on the return line.

Put a hyd gage in the system and check the pressure.

That kick out pressure is adjustable, about 1000 to 2000 psi , as is the relief valve.

Sounds like you have some schmutz in the lines somewhere. Mine did this when I first fired it up after sitting for many years. My kick-out linkage was rusty and stuck, the spool was sticky and even after all that was fixed, it still would not kick out. When I removed the lines from the output of the valve, some black mushy pieces came out, I still don't know what they were, but it's been fine since. Even with a filter, some stuff may get hung up in low valleys in the valves.
