farmall h
I have a Farm all H. I just purhased a hydraulic log splitter for it. The splitter works fine, except for the fact that it will only split coffee can size logs. It is lach power for bigger ones. Any ideas? I know little about tractors, & less about hydraulics.

pictures and dimensions would be nice

I will do that next time I get to my cabin. Someone told me The H does not put out enough pressure & I need to get a bigger ram.

One source said the tractor had a max pressure of 850 psi.

Your tractor appears to have about 20 HP, so a Prince hyd pump would work, but at $500, it might not be worth it. Plus a larger cyl.

If you just installed a 4 in cyl with 2 in shaft, using the 850 psi, the force would be about 10,681 lbs, about 5 ton.

I have a Farmall H, but if I wanted to put a logsplitter on it, I'd get a pto powered hydraulic setup for it. The hydraulic system is low pressure, and the pump is a little weak for that kind of work. At best, it will be slow.

Should you get the pump above, and a 4 in bore cyl, with a 2 in rod, and 24 in stroke.

The extended force generated would be about 28,274 lbs, or 14 ton.

Extend time would be about 6.85 sec
Retract time would be about 5.1 sec
Total cycle time of -----------11.95 sec

As others have stated, you are lacking not only in pressure but also GPM with a factory farmall H hydraulic system!

Go to the pto pump and tank of you are going to split with an H.

For the cost that you would have invested in just making it "acceptable", you can get a pretty good stand-alone unit.

The ones you can buy @ TSC are pretty good. The huskee ones are just re-badged Speeco units and are good splitters.

I would possibly see about taking the 3PH unit back, and putting another few hundred with it to get a 20T standalone.

I dont know what you paid for the 3PH unit, or where you got it at, but TSC often sells the 20T units for $999

If you are using the original H hydraulic system, it is feeble to begin with but also wears out quickly. In addition, it operates after the clutch. It was such a pain in the butt to drive the loader into the bank, shift to neutral so I could raise, then shift it into reverse so I could pull away. When it wore out to the point of being useless, we replaced it with a pump that fit between the distributor (we had replaced the original magneto with a distributor) and its drive. That gave full time hydraulics, something you won't have with any PTO driven pump on a H.

A fan belt clutch type hyd pump would work for the hyd. My Power-Trac does quite well with a 3 GPM flow at 3000 psi. There are other similar pumps that have a higher GPM capacity, for about $150 or less.

He already has more than 3 GPM.
It would take a pretty stout belt drive to transmit the HP required to pump 20+ GPM @ 2500psi.

Best to go to the aforementioned PTO pump, or trash the Farmall idea completely and buy a standalone splitter.
