I have a transaxle from a lawn tractor. No idea what make.I want to make a Model T truck thingie to putt up and down the road.Plan on putting the transaxle under the seat to keep the shift mech. short and run a drive chain down to a live axle. How would I go about locking out the slip on this thing?I'd hate to weld it up and find the free shaft spinning merrily away in open air!!!

either weld or clamp the free axle to keep it from spinning, or better yet find an external band brake and mount it on the free axle an use it for a clutch. when the brake is released the axle will spin (clutch disengaged) when the brake is tightened the free axle stops spinning and engages the gear axle,of coarse both axles should be stablized with a bearing at outward end of the axle.
have fun and remember the pic's /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had a feeling that this was gonna be simple.Figured I could weld off the extra axle...but that son of a gun already has a brake on it!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Yippie!!! Really like that clutch idea.Thats gonna save me a bunch of pullies.THANKS

I think you will find that stopping one axle will cause the other one to spin twice as fast. Of course this could be a good thing! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tomdually I was about to say the same thing as you did. I made a woods buggy once likethat I had a Golfcart rear end and a verticale shaft engie I couldnt use on that rear end so I mounted a Peerless Transaxle off a yardman mower under the belly. I hooked the drive shaft to one side and had a cheapy band brake from Northern hydraulics on the open end. It worked good. We also use the same type of setup for a friends work barge pile hammer.

I'm getting antsy to start welding.Think I'm gonna hold on to the 20hp for a tractor.I have a 4hp Briggs I think I'm going to use instead. It's got a vertical shaft so I won't have to use a gearbox or wrap a belt 90 deg.4hp might be a bit light in the britches.Dunno..we'll see. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Bob,

I thought the 20 hp. was a bit big, unless you wanted to race it on weekends...... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
