Hi Folks:

Just curious if you generally think the smallest Yanmar's (1100 and 1300) are rugged enough for one of the smaller front loaders and small backhoe. I've heard that these smaller models don't do well with loaders, but I'd imagine that's more because of the light weight than anything else. I'd imagine a small backhoe of the back would add plenty of counterbalance weight. Thoughts?

One other question: are most of the common front loaders designed to be self-leveling as you raise the load?

TIA!
Dave

I don't have a loader or backhoe, but there used to be horror stories making the rounds of the forums about small tractors literally breaking in half under the stress.

I've seen those. But then, there's a story right now on the New Holland forum about a TC30 breaking in half, so I'm not sure that's necessarily isolated to really small tractors! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Long ago when these were sold in the US (1977 or 78) I rented one for a couple of weekends, to cut down a steep backyard into several flat terraces. It was tiny - it easily went through a 48 inch gate with the bucket loaded.

It had 2wd with loader and scraper, and the typical shabby appearance of rental equipment that had been abused by every operator. The rental yard said nothing had ever broken on it.

The first weekend on that project I started with a similar tiny Kubota that had 4wd. For this application in relatively dry ground the 2wd Yanmar was slightly easier to operate, quicker, and more productive compared to the 4wd Kubota. I had thought 4wd was essential but all it added was stiff steering.

I don't know about a backhoe but otherwise they are pretty bulletproof.

Thanks for the post. Do you recall if it was an 1100 or 1300?

Thx,
Dave

I would think you could put a small loader and a small backhoe on. I think the word to remember is small!!! How small? I don't know but small.... My loader is not self leveling. I don't think that most of the cheaper ones are. You should ask for each specific loader if it is self leveling, quick attach, capacities etc... I have seen tiny backhoes on rental tractors!!!!!

Well, that's what I was thinking. Even a small backhoe is better than no backhoe. I have a small "front-hoe" I built for my Power-trac, and it's really effective even though it's small. Probably the bigger question would be where could I get a mini-size 3PH backhoe, or am I going to have to build it myself? I guess the same question would apply to the front loader for that matter.

Ideally, I'd like to keep the whole mess well under 2500 lbs and able to fit on a 5x10 trailer in case I want to tow somewhere. I can tow about 3000 lbs in theory, but I start to get a little nervous with that. The PT and all it's attachments are probably under 1600 lbs or so. I don't have brakes on the trailer, but I'm not sure I can justify retrofitting brakes to it (maybe the inertial kind would be fairly inexpensive? haven't looked) because I may tow it to a friend's house or a church function once every 6 months or something. Usually using it here at my house or at least somewhere in the neighborhood.

If you are thinking about going that route, I would look at the YM1500D. I have seen loaders on the 1300's before but I have never seen one on the 1100. The 1500D is larger than the 1300D but no so big as to be cumbersome. The Koyker 80 loader fits it nicely.

Could have been either. The main thing I remember is that both the Yanmar and the Kubota exceeded my expectations - they were well matched to my small project.

I think the little Kubota was a B6000 like in This thread over in the Kubota forum.

A small backhoe & loader could be put on one of these tractors, but it would require a sub frame.
