This morning, before I let the chickens and guineas out for the day, I had a knock at the door. Strange for such an early hour, and my wife and i still in robes and slippers, I found a young man at the door, asking if we could pull his car out of the mud. He explained he was out there all night, and every time he got out of the car to walk up my neighbors drive, the dogs would scare him back to his car. At first light he must have seen my tractors , and came to my house. I love going out at first light to pull someone out of the mud, in the pouring rain, so I guess I have done my kindness for the day. That is the third pullout this winter, maybe I should hide my tractors behind the barn.

I always look at these kinds of good deeds as my turn for needing a helping hand is just around the corner.
Hope you did not get too wet and the fellow was very thankful for your assistance.

I look foward to those type of projects. Pulling people out of the mud/snow is a good deed that somehow is kinda fun in a way.

Be proud of yourself for taking the time to help your fellow man and I'm sure that down the road your goodwill will be rewarded.

I moved to the country from a populated township back in 1989, and during the years since our house has become a magnet of sorts for all types of travelers with vehicle problems. I've provided gasoline a dozen times, changed more tires than I can remember, helped with mechanical repairs when I could, and probably towed 15 or so people out of a ditch when they slid off the road.

The first year I lived here an older lady walked into our north yard where I was mowing with my yard tractor, she said she had gotten her "little truck" stuck in the driveway about a half mile north. Not having my JD then, I drove my pickup down with her in the passenger seat and what did I see...a 3/4 ton Suburban high centered in a culvert. After an hour of jacking and using planks and with my F150 pulling, I freed the lady's "little truck" as dusk arrived.

She offered to pay me, but I refused anything and told her what my father had always been fond of saying:

"A man never stands taller than when he stoops to help someone else."

I guess this would go under the "no good deed goes unpunished" category.

A few years back, I pulled a young man whom I had taught in high school out of the ditch about a quarter-mile from my farm. Less than a month later, he and a couple other boys broke into the farmhouse and stole all of my friend's (who was renting the house) guns. He didn't call on me to be a character witness at his trial.

I feel certain that the good Lord smiles when you help someone incapable of returning the favor.

You've done a good thing.

I've been on both sides of the street so you did the right thing IMO. In my area we all do what we can for the neighbors because I'd want to feel no shame in picking the phone up for a little help if I needed it. (Which I've done)

It's a running joke that when they ask what you owe you just say I'll catch up with you later.........
