What happens when someone "accidentally" plugs a running generator into the grid? I don't have or use a generator but just curious. Does the voltage backflow thru the power line transformer and then go upstream as a higher voltage? Seems like if it did the load would instantly stall the generator. Probably a stupid question?

If the grid is down, it will backfeed through the transformer and try to energize the grid. If the grid is on, the grid will force the generator to sync with it which can destroy the generator.

Something is going to give. Main breaker on your generators, the lineman's body will begin smoking or your generator will become a burnt smoking wreck when back fed out of sync.
The code book insists on a proper transfer switch for a reason.

Can't see how the utility recommends running a mess of extension cords instead of using a proper transfer switch.

During the '09 ice storm here the power companies said if you were going to hook up a generator then to pull the meter and they would reinstall it after the power was restored to you no questions asked. This was to stop the back feed possibilities. They said the power could jump the gap in the main breaker but couldn't the gap the meter created. Seen them come in where they knew generators were and pull the meters after looking at a switch gear and a disconnect between the generator and the grid.

I had a 30AMP generator when I was building so I wired a basic sub panel off the main panel with fridge, freezer couple of lights and heater on it fed from the main panel. This is contolled by a double pole double throw (transfer switch) that fits in a 4" normal electrical box. Up is power company and down is genset. Short jumper cord from genset to a male wall connector to feed the house, genset is outside covered from weather.
