Live in the sticks Generator switch?

what brand and model number is your house panel. Siemens and Square D make real simple, $60 style interlock units if you dont mind manually shutting off the larger loads.

Personally id rather have a dedicated generator panel, but you can do it this other way

Search Results for generator interlock at The Home Depot

:smiley_aafz:When I want to ask a rookie question I sometimes find the answer in the search box which is great but does this stop others from putting their input in on a topic without getting slammed by somebody say check search? I do have a questions and seek your knowledge that I could not find and it has to do with generators and switches .

We have two 30 amp generators at 7500 and 7600 outputs and are tired of running cables when there is a outage. I have been looking at what is called the interlock or the transfer switch to hook our house when there is a blackout. My main concern is that is there is no back feed in the lines that could harm a worker.

Which would you chose and why?
Howdy,
I see you would like to connect 1 unit to your panel when the power is out.

If you use your head, and not try to run everything it once, the service panel interlock will probably be your best easiest, cheapest choice.

Interlock for your panel, dual breakers for your generator, 10 wire, a generator receptacle, your generator cord set.

You can browse through these vendors (I have never used them, I do not know if they are any good, but the web site shows all the ones which they have interlock kits for)
check Home Depot first if you have a mainline service panel (GE, Square D)

National Ram Electronics
and / or
GenInterlock

The dual pole breaker for your generator hook-up can be any size. Standard dual 30amp for 8000w generators or dual 50amp for 10,000w generators, up to whatever size you can find and fit in your panel.

Or, if your panel is a oddball (not a mainline(popular brand)) you could look at replacing your whole service panel.

A True Transfer switch can work also. BUT, the $$$$ gets a little pricey. Not just for the equipment, but because you have a electrician involved, you have your utility involved, and permits.

As others have stated, there is also the breakout generator panel. They work, but you are limited to what is attached. They might only have room for 6 breakers.

You can look over a thread generator transfer switch connection choices

To answer your question?
I happen to have a interlock at one location, the generlink at one location, and a larger psp transconnect unit at the main farm distribution.

Ask away, there is a lot of knowledge here.
also, keep the linemen alive:thumbsup:

I kind of like the interlock but I want to get in touch with my power company and have them come out and take a look. The panel is inside the wall not outside so looks like some cutting has to be done and above my pay grade to do. Want to thank everybody's input and links and I looked at them all.

Howdy,
You can look there, but, their prices are out of line. Way to expensive.

Howdy,
You might want to take a picture and post it up for suggestions. Whose your electric utility?

I ran into that situation. Underground fed meter box outside, with GE 200amp service panel on the interior side. Of course all insulated, sheetrock, and painted. So much so, that the Generlink was really the cheapest easiest option there.

What happens when someone "accidentally" plugs a running generator into the grid? I don't have or use a generator but just curious. Does the voltage backflow thru the power line transformer and then go upstream as a higher voltage? Seems like if it did the load would instantly stall the generator. Probably a stupid question?
