Liquid Dynamite

As a kid I watched a neighbor do this with some boulders he had in his lawn. He did just as you described - he built a good big, hot, fire around the boulders for a couple of days, and then ran cold water from a nearby stream on them. It worked, with sometimes dramatic/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif results! I remember him telling a bunch of us kids to back way off when he turned on the water. One of those boulders virtually exploded, sending small stones flying everywhere. We thought it was really neat. My Dad didn't when the mower found a few of those small stones the next day....

With regard to preparing the holes -- I guess with a bit of engineering you could rig up a decent size rock drill-bit (perhaps 2-3 inches in diameter and a foot or more long) to a 3pt post-hole digger. Hook up a hose-pipe to keep it cool and leave the tractor running for an hour and you might have what you need!!!
