Does anyone use, or know of, any type of protective covers for your lower link lift pins on your attachments during storage or between uses? I have a few used implements that have very rusty lift pins that will not go into the sockets on my tractor's lift arms. Before i cleaned them up, i figured i would see if there was anything out there to protect them from getting this bad in the future. I have done some searches, but i couldn't find anything out there. Thanks for any info.

If being that rusted and can't be wired brushed or worn out why not just replace them as the cost isn't that bad. My farm supply store has pins from 2 dollars up to 7 dollars depending on the size .

I smear grease on mine.
X2. Sounds like you aren't using that equipment enough. I have had equipment set for years un-used and lift pins never rusted enough so they would go in the lift arms. Clean off the rust and grease them up.

I often spray my pins with Fluid Film. It's a lanolin based aerosol that sticks pretty well. My tractor dealer carries it.

+1 on Fluid Film. In some northern climes, folks use it as automotive undercoating. Awesome stuff for the PTO splines too. Attracts/collects less dirt than most lubes.

I grease the heck out of the pins and jam them back into the equipment lifting points. All my equipment gets used enough so rust buildup is never a problem.

Brake cleaner spray works well removing rust than drill bit oil.

I have seen vinyl caps with a convoluted exterior to allow them to expand and fit different sizes. I have one that will expand to accommodate a trailer ball easily, and when contracted is good to cover a PTO stub. ... I havnt found a current source. :( Must be out there somewhere. :confused2:

Oh well. ... Motorcycle handgrips are about the right size. Left is smaller, but you could slit it. :confused3:
Bicycle handgrips?

+1 on fluid film. I learned about it on this TBN forum and now use it a lot. The other lubricant I use (on trailer bearings, for example) is waterproof (marine-quality) grease.

I'll pile on to a few responses:

> If the lift pins are that badly rusted then getting new ones with that yellow coating is warranted. Sure, the zinc plating will eventually wear off but a lift pin that rusts isn't used that often so it is worth it. Less than $5 each.

> A physical cover, like a plastic tube, just might trap moisture and increase the rusting.

> I am also a Fluid Film fan. Everything that is exposed and vital for operation is coated. It is especially useful on hydraulic cylinder rams. The is no way to retract them all on a backhoe. Thus, the exposed chromed rams are heavily coated with Fluid Film. It also works for over the winter on plow shares, shins, and moldboards.

I've seen stuff laying outside for 10 years before being used and never saw one so rusty I couldn't get my ball sockets over it. Of course now and then it may require a kick with the heel of my boot to get on but it went on. If I was looking for a way to keep them out of the elements I'd grease them up and leave it alone, but it's nothing I've ever worried about.

Might also look at cleaning out the ball sockets on the lower arms of the 3 point. They might have enough junk in them to make it harder to get on.

I used fluid film on my undercarriage this year and was able to buy it at Lowes I think for $10.
