I don't have any pictures of my childhood home, which was a 45 acre remnant of pioneer days overlooking a river. Dad used his GI Bill to buy it in 1950. In 1961, hen I was 14 my dad sold it and bought a place that was a better farm but uglier. The original 1920 house had been used as hay storage, and was only marginally habitable. The tax collector had it appraised at $500, which gives you an idea. He built a small addition so it had a kitchen, first floor bedroom, and utility room. I put the front porch and siding on it. The farm itself had water on both sides, but not much. It was dry land when Dad bought it, but about 1963 he got together with other farmers to form an irrigation district and filed water rights. They pumped water out of the Willamette River into Palmer Creek, and the water flowed along one property line. The other side of the place (left in the photo) was natural riparian vegetation, with beaver, deer, fox, etc.

My dad got his start in farming on 40 acres of a donation land claim our ancestors filed in 1847. The parcel was a mile from front to back, but fairly narrow. About '65 he bought an adjoining 36 acres. He was the last in our family to farm the land. He always held a town job, but he retired about the time Nixon took us off the gold standard and wheat went to $7/bu. He farmed full time for another 3 years, and really raked in the dough. After he retired, the land provided good rental income for him and my mother until 2015.

My place is less commercially viable. This is a shot of the flatter part, but most of it is pretty steep. In this photo, I own everything but the ridge through the notch. We bought it in 1994, and it has been long since paid off. I have been retired for a decade, and it's mostly a roost for a "gentleman farmer" and his wife. We had a decent timber harvest in 2013, but the next one will be after I am long gone.

Hope Dennis doesn't mind us messing with his pic. I cropped it a little and increased the pixel size a little. Here's my frameable version.

Very good. Don't you think moving those few long boards would make it better?
It would make a great picture. Such a nice old house in It's day.
There was a large house about a mile or so from here that was built in 1900 over top of a log slave cabin! The interior walls were of course very thick and plaster off in places you could see the hewn logs inside. I spoke with a neighbor lady in her 90s about it years ago and she knew all about it since her kin lived there. Abandoned but I had permission going there. It was very haunted (seriously).

I like the boards. It makes my imagination wonder what caused them to be there?

The house itself is great. To me it detracts from the house itself which is filled with imagination. It looks out of place to me, obviously someone put them there. The dead leaves, trees, etc. all match the house.
To me as a print it has way more appeal than a modern house, perfect yard, flowers, etc.

This tree needs to get cut. It’s gotta be 100 years old

One limb looks like it could hit the house if it splits off.
