i don't use reloads as carry ammo either.. however.. that begs the question.. how would anyone know what you have.

my reloads.. at leas the ones that are only on a few cycles.. look like factory ammo. it's not untill the brass gets a dark patina that i can tell the difference. ;)

Oh, trust me a good investigator will go looking for that. Example bullet type used might not match up with the case recovered from the scene... maybe a Hornady bullet and a Remington case for example.. That will throw a big red flag to the Prosecutors investigator, and that could be the focus of their case when they have nothing else in their bag of tricks. The fact that you are a competitive shooter may factor in the charges brought against you. Your mindset at the time.. etc etc. It depends on the jurisdiction, but sometime the book could be thrown at the survivor that defended himself against a guy with 40 convictions for felonious assault and robbery, rape and tax evasion. You know a total loser. Well when they get done, you will have shot a "great guy" "a good boy" "a quiet man" "a good father (of 47 children without benefit of marriage of course)". Read the Ayoob files for more information. Never use reloads for your Personal Defense handgun.. There are lots of good factory loads, pick one you like.

i guess if someone pulled inthe CSI team.. they might be able to figure out bullet type.. but that almost seems a stretch.

for instance.

my 30-30 relaods are 150gr round nose soft points.. factory.. and that's what i buy to reload with.

my 30-06 ammo is either 150 or 180 gr spire point.. which is what I buy commercial.. or reloading. ( am expirementing with 165 however.... again.. available as a commercial load too.. )

i think the'd have to dig hard... :)

and in the case of a lawfull shooting.. like self defense.. I doubt they will be digging a slug out to microscope it..

yep.. that looks way wrong... i'd like to see a pic of the tool that made that. I can run my cases onthe crimp remover and hold there till my hand is tired and once bottomed.. there is no more cutting.

either the shank is short.. or the primer pocket is too deep.. or it's a combo tool with a pp true end mill on it and was cutting deeper intothe pocket.. or they have added a wide angle taper cutting edge to ther new tools.

i would not run the one on the right either.

Finally got around to taking the picture. The one on the left is the Lyman that came with the prep center on the right is the RCBS Military Crimp Remover.

I tried it on some other headstamps and it does the same thing.

Agreed, as cheap as I am, even I don't use reloads in any PD guns. Never have, never will

Would everyone agree that practicing with reloads in your PD gun is OK? Just be sure that your regular PD ammo is back in the gun after practice?

Yes since you can make your hand loads mimic your carry loads.

Agreed. It is what I do. After practice, clean it up and load it up with the defensive ammo.

I think it is fine. Just make sure to clean the gun and reload with the PD ammo.

Very good thread too, James. I haven't seen anything this good in all the reloading forums visited in the past month.

Thank You. I enjoyed taking the pix and writing it up. I got started reloading at my daddy's knee when I was about 6 years old. Just big enough to pull the handle on an old Pacific single stage press. We were loading .38 special 158 grain lead round nose with bullseye powder in those days. That has been a while, and there were a lot of years in between before I started reloading again.
