Okay Happy... here is a story and a few humble finds.

I got an email from my widow neighbor lady a couple weeks ago to a short few of us neighbors inviting us to rummage through her husband's shop. They were married 65+ years. He passed away a little more than a half year ago. A US Navy WWII veteran who joined voluntarily underage, cheating a year on his application. I called her and said I would be honored.

Most all of the power tools were claimed or sold (I would of passed on them anyways) but she wanted us to take what we wanted of what was left. I spent an most of an hour walking through and touching most of the hand tools, jigs, and so many remnants of projects. I kept grabbing a lot of modified chisels, saws, files, scrapers, and pry bars and got to wondering what all he did. Nostalgic.

I know he worked most of his years in the Puget Sound Navy Shipyard in the wood shop, and later built a few homes including their own. A real craftsman. Got to pondering more about the modified tools and came to the conclusion that he probably broke many of them over the years... and then machined, and worked them to be 'custom'. Obviously he got a lot of use out of his tools and himself. His modest garage/shop just wafted of pride. He passed at 89 years, using his tools to the end... and that's my goal now. Anyways... so much of his life there but I only took three items not because they are especially treasures but because all are the most basic tools and said, made in U.S.A. It just didn't feel right to take more. R.I.P. Lawrence.

P.S. you gotta love what a little WD-40 does to a struggling tool!

P.S.S. I should've saved some of those tired, worn, modified, no-name tools just for the memories.

Great story.

Kinda similar to what I do when someone in our family or close friends passes away and we get the task of going through everything. I try and find one or two things that mean something to me that maybe the passed person and I shared a good time with, and I keep that in my "old friends" collection. I got some neat, small stuff that means something to me. Then I help them sort and distribute per their wishes. If they want me to take something, I'll take it, but I usually don't want much. Just something for the memories. :)

One of the coolest things I have is from one of my sister's mother-in-law. She was born around the turn of the century. Out of the blue one day, she gave me her father's bullet mold. Its a hinged mold with two projectiles, one of which is a round ball and the other a conical shape. I asked her why she didn't give it to one of her kids or grand kids? She said she thought I'd appreciate it more..... its getting dusty in here... ;)

Sorry, no pic right now but I just picked up a Dake 25H hydraulic press for $150. Needs sandblasted and new paint but otherwise is in great shape. What a beast and a great example of American made quality!!

Here's my Made in USA 1.5 ton Dake arbor press and 10 ton Whitney punch press.

Both are sitting on my homemade Big Barn "Made in Canada" hydraulic H frame press.

Man got this awesome vintage Craftsman tool chest for $20 at the weekend flea mkt yesterday. I supposed I could have dickered the price some but I didn't even bother too. I always remembered seeing it in the old Craftsman tool catalogs. Inside it will hold a 24" level. All steel box with D ring side handles, triple latched, keyed lock (included one key) and is it ever HEAVY! :D

Wow weighs 19.5 lbs empty without any tools at all. :confused2:

The inside is totally pristine including the black compartmental steel tray so looks like it has never been used at all. A few scratches on the outside though. Anybody ever match up Craftsman red paint before?

Kind of puts that new poly Milwaukee work box to shame really
