Let's lose a tractor!

If I'm not too late, I'll get in on the play. I read the first post on the thread and thought it was a good idea, especially since I was already planning to try to get back down to just overweight from the obese range. About three years ago, we had a family reunion and I got enough notice that I was able to lose about 40lb and not look too bad beside my two brothers in the swim suit pictures. I gained it all back, plus some, but wasn't really sure how much more until today. I resurrected the scales, calibrated them with some olympic weights I have sitting around, and found that I am at 260. I'm gonna be 60 this spring and am 6'2", but since I only have a 32" inseam I figure I should be 6'4"! Body shape makes a difference, so I always spot myself at least 20lb on any normal-weight scale! Anyway, another family reunion is coming up in June and I'm shooting for 220-230 by then.

Plan: I have an elliptical trainer and one of those weight-stack exercise setups that lets me do various arm and leg exercises as well as crunches. Last time I got in the routine I had a treadmill, but between my son running 5 miles a day on it and my overweight treading, the belt wore out. The elliptical was about the same price as fixing the treadmill, so now I'll be doing 30 minutes on it followed by various exercises on the weight machine. I do have free weights, but I'm reluctant to do more than curls and upright rowing for safety reasons. As to diet....last time, when I was a young 56, all I really needed to do was eliminate almost all beer, and make some effort to eat more fruits and vegetables and stay away from the salty snacks. I have never really been into most sweet stuff, so I can't eliminate that part for much effect. I suspect I'll have to drop more than the beer this time around because I already can't drink as mush as I used to, even three years ago. There are some benefits to being a cheap drunk, I suppose!.

So....shooting to lose 30-40 lbs by late June.

Welcome aboard, Chuck. It does get a little harder to lose as we get older, but the rewards of good health should be justification enough. If I can, I'll try to add encouragement when needed.

OK,

I will play. Can we back up a year to Jan 2008?
December 07 brought hearts problems and a stent/new experience for me.
By late last fall - September 08 the first stent blocked up and I returned to the hospital for
a new replacement.

From November 07 (that's when I started to lose weight - a little too late) to present I have lost about 45 lbs. I have another 30 to go Dr. wants me to weigh in around 160.

So for the record: 5'7" 192lbs Age 45. I know a little too young. But cardiac problems run in the family. In fact the uncle I was named after died at 45 - leaving the Dr office - annual checkup. My experience was very close to that - too close and too scary at the time - another story.

In my youth(21 years ago) I was very athletic and in shape(weren't we all) if I can say one thing to you all, without preaching - please, please take this seriously and loose the weight. You owe it to yourself, your family and your friends.

Best of luck...

Lloyd

PS: with the gained room in front I have no more back pain and can get into smaller and tighter areas - bonus!!!!!!

ok--
Well I'm not sure this qualifies.. but I started at 192 after thanksgiving..
Right now I am at 168...
5'6 and wanting to get back to about 150-160 range.. you know the lean mean I'm still a Marine weight.
Ok-- ok-- Maybe I'm not as mean, and I'm gettting as lean...And of course you never stop being a Marine......

And for the reference---I am sure someone has seen the bumper sticker / hat / T-shirt:
"Not as lean, not as mean, BUT STILL A MARINE "

Been out almost 10 years, and want to get back in shape a little.

anyway-- that should be a good start add 24 pounds....

I have made it down to the 300# mark as of this week. That is a 25 # loss in January, down 45 since last summer. My goal is to be at 250 or less.

The doctors diet I am on is very strict. I have found that if I cheat even 1 day it takes another 2 days for my body to get back in the weight loss mode. The first part of last week I did not loose any weight after going out to eat with others. Then the last part of the week I lost 4 more pounds after sticking with the diet.

I am starting to regain some energy and have spent the last few days fixing stuff around the farm that have been broke for years. Even mowed the pasture yesterday.

Doug,

Congratulations! I just signed up, and I think I may have lost a few pounds before I did because I started exercising about the first of January. Whether I lost weight or not, I certainly feel better after getting back to the exercises. If you could just somehow bottle that feeling, with the added spring in your step and such, it sure would make it easier to resist letting it all slide again, wouldn't it?

Just when I thought this "room" was empty, it got fill with a lot of interesting stories and successes. It's great to hear how everyone is doing so well. That's lots of encouragement for me.

Uncle Doug, way to go! Breaking 300 is huge. I know what you mean by it taking a long time to make up for a slip-up on the diet. It's like your body is just starving to use everything you eat and just waiting to ambush your diet if you eat anything out of the normal. Last weekend we went to a Luby's Cafeteria with some friends. I had blackened tilapia with cabbage, green beans, and a caesar salad. The fish and caesar dressing must have been too much because it took two days to start losing again just like you mentioned.

Well, yesterday I took a frozen pack of our garden blackeye and purple hull peas out of the freezer and cooked them with a few simple spices and onion. My wife quartered a head of cabbage and steamed that in some lightly vinegared water. For lunch around 2 pm yesterday, I had a small bowl of peas and another small bowl of cabbage, nothing else. It was terrific. I put two containers of peas (two servings per container) in the refrigerator and I'll have them later this week. For dinner last night, I had more cabbage and some of my vegetable soup from last week. I haven't weighed this week, but I'll bet that my weight loss is slowing, but still going in the right direction. At least, I hope so.

I lost another pound. That makes 5 total for me so far. Of course that was before I had to come in to work to do a midnight pilot run of a new product and spent 4 hours sampling different recipes. It's hard to lose weight when part of my job is to eat.

Here's our progress together. With 5 more joining since the last update our goal is now up to 611.6. We're getting closer to a 4 wheeled tractor. Our total lost so far is 89 pounds with 9 of us reporting weight loss since the beginning. The top 3 losers so far are Uncle Doug, Jinman, and Dooley. Way to go, guys!! Keep up the good work.

There are a few of you out there who still need to give us a first update. Let us know how you're doing good, bad, or otherwise. We'll only ridicule you enough to motivate you. :)

Good Afternoon Jim,

Mornin' Scotty, we bought another head of cabbage at the store this week, but haven't cooked it yet. You can bet there won't be any bacon bits when I do.:( However, I do put in about 1/2 cup of vinegar to give it just a bit of zip. Even my wife told me that she thought it was really good.:)

Well, I had hoped to report slippin' under 240 this week, but it didn't happen. I'm down only another 3 lb to 241. My body has now discovered how to "sort" through everything I eat to get every ounce of nutrition. When that happens, I seem to lose weight in spurts. This week was a weak spurt.:p

I finally weighed again and am down more than 5 lbs. My scale is not easy to read to higher precision, so if it doesn't show at least a 5 lb change I don't trust the reading. I ought to get a digital scale with a darn big readout, but I bet if I weighed at different times of the day I'd see at least a 5 lb range just due to that.

I'm on my way down to the basement after I watch a little news, have my coffee and a yogurt and think about life for a bit. I'll do 30 minutes on the elliptical (no extra resistance yet), then do some arm and leg exercises on the weight machine. I try to do those at a speed that keeps up my heart rate, so I don't load up on the weights too much. Then a few crunches, and if I'm still standing I'll do some curls and upright rowing with the barbell. That may make up in part for the wine I had with dinner last night. Ah well. At least it wasn't the six pack of good beer, like Schlafley APA or Long Hammer IPA, that I used to have on Friday night.

I finally broke the 240 lb barrier this week. I weighed 237 yesterday afternoon, so I'm down another 4 lb at least. It's been another good week.:)

I forgot again to weigh this morning. We had a superbowl party last Sunday, and I ate way too much. I've been repenting this week, but I have yet to see if I've done enough.

Keep the updates coming.
