How long are the augers for the post hole diggers for the BX22 and BX2200?

I have a Rhino that the dealer cut 6 inches out of, I'll measure it when I get it back, it's out putting up a fence at a relatives... even now it's very close the the ground and bottoms out a lot when driving the tractor over uneven terrain. These machines are kind of low.

I'll say this, a PHD protected by a shear pin is a pain. I'd much rather have a slip clutch.

I have a 42" auger on my BX2200, I did not modify it that is the way it came.
When fully raised it has 14" of clearance with auger verticle and on flat ground.
I have drilled aprox 125 holes with it and have only sheared one bolt. Soil conditions vary quite a bit.

Thanks, what is the make of your post hole digger?

Sorry it took a few days to get back to you,
The post hole digger I have is a Farm Star model 500 standard duty digger.
Farm star has three models: 300-compact/utility, 500-standard duty, and 700-heavy duty.
Here is a link to their web site<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.farmstar.com/product/phd-sd.html> Farm Star</A>
Like I had said the model 500 fit my bx just fine and was a lot heavier than the 300.
Hope this helps, let me know if I can help any further.

Thanks for the info, about how much was this post hole digger if you don't mind me asking?

The post hole digger was $349.00 and the 9" auger was $95.00
If you do buy one of these be aware that it is shipped without oil in the gear box, it is no big deal to put in but you will want to have a couple quarts on hand. Also a few extra shear bolts are a good idea. I don't remember the exact size but it uses standard bolts for this, just don't use the hardened grade of bolt.
Have you purchased a BX yet?

I'm considering an auger for my BX22 as well. When I spoke with my selling dealer on it, he advised me to skip the attachment and instead rent a skid steer with an auger set-up. Told me it would be hugely faster to do holes with the skid steer setup and I'd be there for days on end with a tractor mounted one.

So my question is this.....how hard (or how much time) does it take to drill an average hole with the BX?

TIA,

Duane

Duane,
First congrats on the BX, I got my BX2200 early this spring and feel it was a smart purchase. Anyway it is hard to tell what is an average hole in your application but to answer the question on average of the 180+/- holes I have drilled I would have to say about 1 minute per hole.
The BX is easy to manouver into position, I take my time running the throttle about 1/2 to 3/4 open, drop the point to just engage the ground where I want the hole, engage the PTO and drop the auger a little at a time to keep it from screwing itself into the ground.
I am inclined to disagree with your dealer, I would rather spend the money for something I own, than on rent.
I have drilled in some pretty rocky area's that a couple holes took a little longer but by taking my time I have only sheared one bolt in all those holes.
I was drilling some post holes for a friend that had very thick turf and we had to start each hole, clean the turf off the end of the auger then finish the hole. The grass clogged the cutters and would not drill, if it had not been so wet I don't thind that would have been an issue. Those 10 holes probably took 20 minutes. Sure beats a shovel!/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Post hole diggers don't seem to take much power in average soil. I operate mine at only about 1500 RPMs. I was planting about 200 small white pine and it only tales about a minute per hole, like rmcess, the cutters would get blocked by small vines, grass no problem. I'm glad to have the implement.
