Why can't we all just get along? If I am out for a casual drive, I just pull over so the other guy can go faster. Why so so many have such a strong desire to try to control the behavior of others...especially when it can be dangerous?

Well said!!

My philosophy on the road is "Don't cause problems for other drivers". 'going with the flow' is a simple part of that.

My tailgating story;

I could never understand why people would speed too work. I was never in a hurry to get to work. I drove farm-to-market roads at 5:15 A.M. and usually 50 mph.

One morning a car with bright lights comes up behind me on a hill and can't pass. When we crest the hill I slowed to 45 mph and he stayed on my bumper with his brights on. So I slowed to 40 and he stays there. I set the cruse at 35 thinking he would surely pass...nope. He follows me 8 more miles and into my work parking lot with his brights on all the way.

When he got out of his car and went inside the building I figured it was safe for me to go to work.

When it comes to 'tailgaters' I often consider DIYing something that'll spray their windshield with mud or something similar.
Hate being able to identify the color of their eyeballs, and I kid U not, seen that all too often.
Just too many that want to be there B4 they left.

Perhaps a second 'window washer' in the trunk with a spray nozzle above, or even in, the trunk lid. I'll have to think about that. Even with clear fluid it would be annoying by about the second squirt.

It's pretty effective to just use your windshield washer if you're going reasonably fast, and the tailgater is driving a convertible :)

In high school, my Mitsubishi Eclipse hatchback had a separate reservoir, pump and nozzle for spraying the rear hatch glass. If you took a pick, you could easily rotate the nozzle so it sprayed backwards, instead of forwards down onto the glass. So naturally, I did this, and would blast washer fluid right onto anyone who dared tailgate me. Being that my eclipse was turbocharged, tuned up, and I had zero fear, I would spray them and then blast away, daring them to keep up. Somehow I did not die.

I was always tempted to put some foul smelling liquid in the rear washer tank, or at least some red food coloring. But I never did.

My tailgating story... I was on my way home after a long day. It was about 7:00 PM on a winter night, and I just wanted to get home, start a fire and enjoy a cold beverage. About 40 miles from home, I came up behind a slow moving vehicle so I passed him. He immediately sped up, passed me, and slowed down again. I went by him again and the same thing was repeated. I pulled over to let him get ahead and read a book for a few minutes.

1/2 mile down the road, he was waiting for me and the process started over again. By this time I was getting POed , he was in front again so I decided to pull into a store to get cooled down. Like a dumbbell I automatically turned on my blinker, so he pulled over and blocked the entrance. I should have ended it there but proceeded along my way.

8 miles down the road he came flying up behind me and crawled up on my bumper with his high beams on. At that point I had no cell coverage and it was obvious something was going on. I knew that I was approaching a woods road which was plowed out so with one hand I started gathering things; winter coat, gloves, cell phone, compass, flash light... the 12 gauge in the back seat. My plan was to hit the woods road hard in 4wd and if I could get ahead of him I would ditch the truck, grab my snowshoes out of the back and head cross country to a hilltop about 2 miles away where I knew that my phone would work. Luckily though just before I got to the turn he flew by me at a high rate of speed and I never saw him again. To this day I have no idea who it was or why he was acting that way.

That is very weird, @Jstpssng. My tailgating story also dovetails onto "kids" doing stupid things.

When I was in high school, I was in a rock band that was moderately popular at a local level. I was traveling back from a gig one night to drop off equipment at another band member's house before going home. I thought that the band member behind me was following too closely, so I decided to give him the "tailgater routine." That involves slowly drifting left of center and then jerking the steering right. Then repeat by drifting to the right. After a few of these, he wasn't backing off, so I decided to play chase with him through a residential neighborhood, and he stayed with me the whole time.

I gave it up shortly before pulling into the house where we were to drop off the equipment, and I was surprised to see that the car I thought was behind me was already there. So who's behind me? I pulled into the driveway and the blue lights came one. The only thing that saved me was that I was completely sober (believe it or not). I told him the whole story about the tailgater routine, and he told me not to do that anymore.

I was mildly insulted that he didn't even think our chase scene was worth mentioning. I thought I did some pretty fancy driving, and he didn't seem to think it was anything. Granted, I was driving my dad's 6-cylinder pickup and it was loaded down with equipment, but still! ;)

I'm pretty sure that's entrapment, but I've seen cops do it a lot.

I'm sure they'll justify it to a judge that they needed to be close to read the license plate... but we all know it's to provoke someone into speeding or slamming on the brakes, or otherwise start driving erratically

I think they do that while checking your speed for radar, but there's no excuse to follow you for that long.
Years ago when coming back from NY I used to travel Rte 89 down through Vermont. Quite often I would be traveling along at about the same speed as everybody else when a car would come flying up from behind and climb up onto my bumper. I would think "That's either state cop or a Massachusetts driver." Invariably they would swing out at the last minute to go by, and it would be a car with Massachusetts plates.

same thing...on the freeway, beautiful clear day. .i went to pass this big f250 going 55, right lane. All jacked up with loud exhaust. he'd accelerate as i tried to pass, you could hear the rpms on his POS grocery getter.

young couple, chubbies, maybe 25-30?

i'd slow down, he'd slow down. almost aggressive. it was like a game to him.

third time i pulled up next to him, showed him my phone, and mouthed the numbers. 911

his wife was screaming at him. i mean she was out of control, rage. He immediately slowed way down and i was gone.

I will bet serious money this guy had previous complaints filed against his aggressive driving and the wife was thinking about life after hubby loses his license.

That's why i do not carry a gun.
