The way I've heard it, 4WD just gets you stuck further in.

That said, I've used the BH to pull myself out of a number of holes, on a number of machines, including tracked machines.

yes if you manage to stick a 4x4 your stuck worse than a 2wd drive.you have to use common sense regardless of what tractor your driving.

Also a BH is good for the same use...

Both at once is the trick to master.

I learned a long long time ago:
4 wheel drive is there to get you out of trouble, not into it.

(Same goes for steering brakes on a 2wd tractor)

My father in law bought a 2WD MF 375 in preparation for retirement in 1986. Less than two months later, it was replaced by a 4WD 375 and we haven't bought a 2WD since.

A wise man once told me if you are afraid of getting stuck far from home, keep it in 2WD until you get stuck then put it in 4WD to get out and go home.

We were mucking out an old erosion control pond this fall with our L5030 and M8540. My son bottomed out in the M8540 regularly, but was able to get out with the FEL, he never got stuck until the belly hit and hit pretty solid.
