I have a steel power steering line that consists of the line, a compression fitting, and a barrel nut. The line connects to my steering box. The problem is fluid is leaking from between the line and the nut. I've tightened the line, but it still leaks.

Any repair tips other than having to replace the line?

you might try backing the nut off then re-seating it..

I have fixed leaking flare compression fittings by wrapping a couple turns of cotton string around the flare, then tightening the nut back onto the fitting. Cotton string about 1/16th inch in diameter worked for me, and you may have to try several times to get the right amount of string so the nut will go on the fitting. PS fluid might dissolve other types of string. Hope this helps.

I am a new tractor owner, and I have a hydraulic leak on my 3 points, the power steering and 3 point should use the same hydraulics. I ordered the tech manual from Deere and read through the entire hydraulic theory and repair section. Not as interesting as it sounds. Anyhow every single page usually multiple times says if you are repairing a hydraulic leak you must replace the o-rings, used o-rings leak. The other thing they stress is proper torque levels so cranking down on something maybe just as detrimental as not having it tight enough. I am taking my 3-point leak into the shop since its under warranty and the service manager has agreed to let me watch and help with the repair, since I think I know how to do it, it should be educational. All that was to say maybe you need a new o-ring lol, good luck.

IMHO. once compression fittings leak.. you need to repalce parts..

Yep...you can try bandaids (the cotton string), but you may as well get a replacement line on order.

Thanks for the links on those seals, I didn't even know such an animal existed.

A wrap of teflon tape probably will do the trick. Just be extra careful and don't get it into the flow line. Ken Sweet

I might try that if I was stuck in a field with rain coming or something.. but I'd sure be ording the real deal when I got home. I've seen thread tape in hyd valves and had to hand pick it out of orbital valves.

We've banned the use of ALL teflon tape in our shop.....we use any type of TFE paste....Loctite PST is our favorite.....some manufacturers will void warranty if teflon tape is present on any fittings!!!!!

the shop we use won't do ANY work on stuff with tape on it.. or paint on any cyl rods. they send it back tell ya sorry about your luck, and then give you the price on a new assembly.

I am with you on that advice. Teflon is not a long term solution. Ken Sweet

it's too hard to clean and remove too.. it shreds and gets in valves.. reliefs and everething.

I've spent 8 hours with a dental pick, spray can and blowgun cleaning a hyd steering system to remove teflon because a worker was too busy to replace a 45$ coupling before. which still had to be repalced later.

hmm.. 8 hrs work plus the part.. or just the part.. don't take a cpa to do the math there.. :)
