Yesterday my wife and I went to an open house at one of the local lawn equipment dealers. We are looking for a residential zero turn mower for our 1/2 acre yard. The dealer had LawnBoy zero turns, these mowers have a dual hydro drive which suprised me. The other machine I am looking at is the Cub RZT 42. There is a $1000.00 differance in price between the machines. Is having dual hydros and a Honda V-twin engine worth the extra bucks?

I guess you know that Lawnboy used to be owned by OMC, but is now owned by Toro. And the new Lawnboy ZTR pictures sure do look almost just like a Toro. I have the smallest Toro with a Briggs engine and like it so far, but I would be a bit partial to the Honda, I think. As for whether the Lawnboy is better than the Cub; I don't know.

dual hydro drive is just a fancy way of saying "consumer style drives"; as opposed to pumps/wheel motors.

The Toro Z (from their website last year; didn't see any changes just now though) and CC RZT will have the smallest grade of that tranny. The ZX transmissions will be more like the CC Z-Force (still integrated, but rated heavier).

If it's an '06; I'd gladly take the RZT's Kaw as easially as a Honda. I still wonder if they'll try sneaking cheaper components into it (knowing they're going into consumer machines), but then the same paranoia could be said about Honda or anyone!

Now that I've thoroughly confused you; the good news. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gifYour size of lot is what those things are designed for and should give you many happy years of service with either.

Of course, if either mower brand or engine brand is preferable to you, you might be more likely to maintain it properly so perhaps some consideration there! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kawasaki and Honda both make great engines. If I was choosing... I'd take a Honda.

I was wrong about the RZT42, that has Kohler Courage. If the 50" deck isn't too wide, I'd opt for spending the extra $400 to get that and the Kawasaki on the RZT50.

Ironically, that $1K figure puts you in the ZForce44 (Kohler Command) of the CC line; I would take that over the Lawnboy, but partially because I've never seen a Lawnboy Z except on the computer screen! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Exactly...for another 1K you can get into a Z-Force!

For 1/2 acre I'd go with a commercial 48-inch walkbehind mower. It will last you forever.

Yes, but then you have to walk, and you'll probably spill your whiskey and coke. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
