I don't know if this is the correct place to post, but here goes.
I need to replace an old Snapper riding mower. Looking at Snapper, JD, Sabre (made by JD) and Sears. Any experts out there? Is there a mower site I should visit? I trust the comments here. Thanks, John.

John,

First , what is your budget and what are your cutting needs (ie, total acreage)? Then we can talk tractors, makes, and models.

Regards.

I need to cut about 2 acres of lawn. Would like to specd less than $2000. I have been using a 28 inch, 8 hp Snapper for last 5 years. It seems a bit small, but does get the job done. John.

John,

I don't know much about Snapper. The Sears/Craftman lawn tractors are an economical way to go but their workmanship is very questionable. If you have the chance, just look and compare the mower decks and front axles of Craftman mowers with Snapper and John Deere. You will immediately notice how 'tinny' the Craftman tractor mowers appear to be. Everyone I've known who has had a Sears/Craftman has sold it within 2-3 years...due to engine and/or other mechanical difficulties.

My experience has been with John Deere. I own a 1984 111 with a 11HP engine and 38" mower deck. This size tractor should meet your needs. I have never had a problem with the 111 and I've mowed about 4 acres at a time with it.

The Sabre Lawn Tractors are made by John Deere and are sold in places like Lowe's and Home Depot as well as at JD dealerships. They are a bit less in price than the regular JD lawn tractors but by appearances so is the workmanship. If you go with a Sabre, look at the 14.542GS model (14.5HP w/ 42 in deck). This is the smallest they currently make. The current equivalent of my JD111 is the SST15 (15HP w/ 42in deck), SST16 (16HP w/ 42in deck), and the SST18 (18HP and 42in deck). The aforementioned Sabre model and the SST15 should be in the $2K range or a bit less for the Sabre. Hope this helps.

John,
You might want to visit the tractor forum at Gardenweb.com Lots of discussions and sometimes even useful info. Although they currently seem to be in a premium vs. box store mowers verbal war.

There used to be major Craftsman bashing there but now a strong contigent of Craftsman DLT owners stand up for their tractors. So far the DLT has been getting good reviews. They are in your range and worth a look.

I had a Craftsman 11.5 HP 38' cut lawn tractor for 10 years. I mowed almost one acre. Never was consistent with the maintenance. Oil changes yearly and spark plug and air filter when I remembered to buy them. Had to replace a mandrel after hitting a tree stump. The thing ran great all the time. Used it to haul tons of dirt and sand and bricks as I landscaped.

Moved to NH and used it to haul firewood as well. Gave it away after buying a Toro (fell into a great deal- otherwise would have bought another Craftsman). The Craftsman is still in use as far as I know. So now it is 12 YO.

As mentioned above the JD Sabre and Scotts are in your price range. Around here Sabre is available only at the JD dealers while Scotts is only at HD.

One last note. I no longer post at the garden.web. Issues with spam and the webmaster selling email addys. Besides this site is much better moderated and freindly and helpful. So if you vist the GW you might just want to lurk.

You could go to Lawnsite. This is a discussion forum for professional landscapers. Most of their talk revolves around the commercial aspects of lawn maintenance, but there is a section devoted solely to "homeowners" who want to ask the pros questions.

John,

Forgot to mention in my previous post that you may also want to check out the LT150 (15HP, 5-speed standard tranny, w/38in mower deck). This model is likely a bit less expensive than the SST15 and most certainly in your $2K budget range. This will likely handle 2 acres with ease and then some.

John,

I'm starting to appreciate the improvements recently made in the Craftsman line. Especially, the DLT2000. It's a little bit more than $2000 dollars, but it comes with a decent Kohler power plant, Cast Iron front axles and a 10 gauge steel deck.
Understand that it is on sale through 4/20.

It might be worth the look?

Also, as mentioned by others an older JD could be easily had within your price range. I recently spotted a JD316 with 50in deck, hydro and an 18HP ONAN engine. It only had a little over 400 hours on it, and it was going for $2200 at a dealer.
I snoozed and loosed on that one.

The older 300 series are legendary for their reliability. Steer clear of the JD317. There were some issues with that powerplant , but I've heard that a number of them have a replacement engine that's fine. Someone more in the know should be able to come up with the model number to look for.

If you don't mind rowing your own gears, a mid-eighties JD212 might be a consideration. Their turning radius is a bit long, but I've seen them for around $1100-$1400 in good condition.

Scope out the local dealers, folks are trading right now and the USED market should be pretty active. Also scope out the local papers for auctions in your area. A few years back, we picked up an old JD110 for around $550. I was anything but kind to it on my rough property. But it never failed to impress. I recently sold it to someone at work who is into tractor restoration and could easily fix the tranny that was locked in 3rd gear.

Thanks for all the comments. There appear to be good options out there. Yesterday, I took a good look at the old Snapper frame and could not find anything broken or severly worn (the motor is shot). I talked to dealer who will sell me a new engine for about $400. This may allow for a cheap way out of the lawn mower replacement problem and allow for other expenses (my wife has other priorities). I have just never considered replacing an engine on a lawn mower before. John.

I can only tell you what my experience has been.

I bought an ugly green and yellow Yard Man four years ago for the simple reason that it was the only hydro mower I found that my 13-year old daughter could reach the pedal on. My neighbor and good friend bought what I really wanted, a John Deere, the same year. We both mow about 1.25 acres. Mine is 17-hp twin, his 15-hp single. Mine 42" deck, his 38" deck. Mine has pressure lube with filter and I may be mistaken but I don't think his does. Both are hydro. I gave $1600, he gave more than $2000. My blades cost half what his do. I have had no repair cost other than blades due to hitting a stump. He has bought blades, muffler, starter, a switch for pto, at least one bearing on the deck, and now the seat is coming apart. A new seat cost so much that he is sitting on a foam cushion when mowing. I have been out $0 on repair, except for blades, and he over $500. My mower has been available for use any time that I wanted it. He has borrowed mine several times while his is in the shop. This is not what we expected when we bought our mowers. This may not be typical for the Deere or Yard Man, but, based on my experience I would buy another and I suggest you look at one of these mowers. I have seen them advertised for $1500.

Stay away from Craftsman. I have owned them and had good luck but know three in the neighborhood who have had bad luck with 3-4 year old mowers. They were told by the repair men that some models had major problems. One guy finally took his back to Sears and demanded his money back (don't know how that turned out). They may have the problems solved by now.

As for replacing the engine on the Snapper, been there, done that on my mothers. Expect to replace everything else, clutch wheels, axle, belts, etc. within a couple years at the most. We used one junker to keep other 'good one' running for a while until it got to the point we were working on it more than using it. Eventually convinced her that she had spent enough on the old one to buy a new one and still didn't have anything to mow with. Of course she bought a new Snapper exactly like the old one because she already had all the spare parts. She mows around five acres weekly and is 78 years old.

You can get a gem or a lemon in any brand. Dealer service is the deciding factor to a lot of people but never seeing the dealer after buying is the best.

Good luck.

I would also recommend the Garden Web site in addition to this one but for the spamming and flamming and the current JD vs box store tractors flame war raging there now. I also just suggest lurking there till the war subsides at which point you can ask something innocent like---Is a Craftsman any good? or even better---why would anyone buy a Deere when there is Kubota?----then sit back and watch a melt down!!!! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif . Now I am only kidding so please do not answer those questions here--just being humorous /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif . The site does have some good info and knowledgeable regualar contributors. It also has a lawn and yard/garden care site and a small engine site like for chainsaws and stuff like that. J

Stay away from Craftsman

And I just bought one./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif 42" with 21.5hp Briggs, pressure lube and filter, hydro, etc. Only mowed a couple of yards a couple of times with it and can't complain, but it's too new to see how well it'll hold up. I would prefer the foot hydro to the hand lever I have (and a friend has a Deere with the hand lever also), and I would prefer an hour meter which this Craftsman does not have, although it does have an ammeter.

Incidentally, there was a thread awhile back about disconnecting safety switches. When I had a Cub Cadet with the electrically engaged PTO, it would not mow in reverse until I got that safety switch disconnected and the dealer told me it was "illegal" for them to disconnect it, but now this Craftsman is a manual lever to engage the blades, so it mows forward and backward with no problem. Of course the manual does say, Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary. Always look down and behind before and while backing./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

And on the Cub Cadet I also had to disconnect the seat (operator presence) switch because the engine would try to die if I just leaned to one side. On this Craftsman, I can lean either direction as long as there's some weight on some part of the seat and it never stutters, so I don't need to disconnect it.

Buy a used JD-318. Use it until the motor burns up then buy a new Onan engine and you will never need another ridding lawn mower for 20 or more years.

I have a 1978 John Deere 65 and a 1989 John Deere RX 75 (inherited both). I have done nothing to the 65 except for belts, plugs and the like. My father used it to mow cemetaries and schools for 12 years. It's still going. The Rx 75 hasn't seen that kind of use, but I haven't had any problems with it (knock on wood). The spark plug on it is a son-of-a-gun to get out though!

I have a Sears Garden Tractor that is doing very well for me.. No I haven't had it long, but it is taking all I can give it on our 3 acres....
I bought it one year used with the cart.
20hp with 46" deck and was able to bush wack a whole meadow no prob.... No they are not as "tough" as a $4000 tractor, but for mowing and good work they do great.
Go for a drive and you will see plenty of people out on there 6, 8, or 10 year old Craftsmans in my area. Just do the proper maintenance and you are set.

Good Luck with your choice...
