If you don't know what the contents of a drum is, do you really want to be burning it?
Car dealer that once was near my parent's home had a waste oil burner and they'd take oil from anybody who needed to get rid of it. I know for certain tha some of those drums of oil they got had a high content of solvents.
Sometimes they had a nice jet engine effect coming out of their stack on cold winter mornings.
I have to wonder if a selection of bullet holes in an appliance would serve as certification that there was no freon in it?
It varies by county. The county I live in in SC will not take tires or appliances that once had freon* in them at the convenience centers. They have to be taken to the main landfill then one must pay a fee to leave them.
They do occasionally have a free tire day at the main landfill.
I've commented before on TBN about how they make it so hard to dispose of a tire properly, it explains why so many end up in a ditch or creek somewhere, not saying thats the right thing to do.
I've also gottten into a "discussion" with a tire store trying to charge me the state mandated tire disposal fee when I was buying a new tire for a new rim (trailer spare) and had no "old" tire turned in to dispose of, so there should be no disposal fee
*In my county to dispose of any appliance, refrigerator or AC for axample, that once had freon in it- you must present a statement from a certified EPA technician on their letterhead with their EPA certification number that the freon has been removed. Kills the bullet holes or tin snip plans. Again- maybe explains (but doesn't justify) why so many are illegally dumped...

All the counties i have ever lived in SC, and thats 4 and i have dumped in 5 counties yes they all have there things but all took tires. That is Charleston, greenwood, Anderson, Mccormick, and dumped in Pickens counties. Not saying your lieing but i know it varies. Mccormick dont take glass :confused2: but greenwood right beside it does??? As for the applience thing i am not totally positive cause i have donated all the ones i got rid of as they worked.
SKYKO that goes for the state convience centers but im sure a metal scrap yard will take it with the bullet holes or other methods. Even if all you have is 4 of them on the truck or trailer its worth the drive and $15 youll get just to get rid of them inyour county if not taken at landfill.

Local scrap yard here will not take refrigerators if the freon has been tampered with. They have signs all over posted. I dropped one off that had been left in the barn at a rental property and did nothing to it other than push it off the trailer.
Goodwill store the next county over was taking electronics. I took over a coupled of old printers, a 12" TV, and a scanner.

A coworker found a local tire recycling operation while looking for landscaping material. He bought shredded tires and is happy with the "look".
The operation is set up on a farm with a father/son and one worker. You can drop off tires for 2.00/piece. Not free but at least you know where the tires went.
Apparently, these people are doing better at this then farming though they still do some planting. Perhaps you have a similar operation close to you?

When that whole thing started big about 6 years ago they were paying .50-$1 per tire to pick them up, then it went to pick up for free now they are charging to pick them up for the mulch business. I have friends who own a car junk yard and they told me thats where theres went.

I believe it is a $10,000 fine for intentional release of freon.

Since it is a violation of the Clean Air Act to release freon into the atmosphere, I would not admit to doing this.
And also really stupid, since there is about $50 of freon in old refrigerators or air conditioners. They can't manufacture the stuff any more, so recycled freon is the only way to keep old equipment running. The price of freon is sky high. I have a local recycler who is happy to take any quantity of junk appliances. He has an EPA approved freon recycling facility, and makes a good nickle on it.
