Idling a cold engine diesel or petrol is not recommended for any machine. The sooner you bring the oil up to operating temperature the better, just not under load. The oil pump is operating at a greater volume ensuring lubrication to all parts. A study was done back in the 1970s with two identical diesel vehicles working similar roles on highways, one was left idling 5mins to warm up, the other was driven soon as started. After 100,000 miles the engines were dismantled and all parts analyzed for wear. The engine that was 'warmed' had significantly more wear than the one driven immediately after starting. Sorry I cannot give the full details after all these years. The oil is the lifeblood of your engine and early oil changes can only help to extend the life of any engine, no need to wait for the clock. Usage should also determine a logical time to service a vehicle, especially after extended periods of heavy work loads. Often if I borrow equipment, especially small engines without an hour clock, I will change the oil before even starting the engine. Small price to pay foe security and also respect for the owner lending the machine to you in the first place.
