Backhoe L48 sub frame broke

The right side of my L48 sub frame obviously had a lot of water in it and froze over the winter. It has expanded the length of the frame and split wide open. There is no cracks or bad welds where the water could have gotten in. Has anyone with a kubota backhoe sub frame experienced this?

That is strange, there has to be an opening somewhere for the water to get in,
maybe a missing bolt etc.

My sub-frame is fine and it is exposed to snow,ice,water all winter while clearing my drive. Sorry to hear about your problem, Think I would get the dealer involved.

Is the ROPS/FOPS in place and unmodified? With it removed the rear sockets could collect rain. Seems like it would take a lot to fill up the tubing - like being parked where a roof drains on it. My L48's "hat" is off temporarily and your post is telling me to drill some drain holes !!

No openings, it's a boxed frame made of rectangular tubular steel. Kubota rep thought it was from condensation.

The ROPS has never been off the machine. Even if it was, it has nothing to do with the water in the subframe. The part that blew out is the long piece that goes from the FEL brace to the backhoe brace. It is a sealed piece, welded at both ends. Kubota rep advised me to drill drain holes in bottom of both sides of frame for drainage. Putting new frame on, kubota would only cover 850.00 of the 2,444.00. If I knew how to weld I would have fixed the old one.

Your Kubota dealer if full of BS. No way for condensation to form in a sealed area. There has to be a hole in the frame somewhere,possibly two with one or more on top of the frame and a drain hole that is stopped up which caused the frame to fill with water. In order for ice to split the box frame, it had to be completely full of water. You need to look more closely to find the hole(s).
I think I would look for a welder to weld up the split if no other damage is evident.
Is the $850 the cost of the frame and the rest labor to install?

Possibly not freeze damage? - if the crack is long it might be from defective material when it was formed. If the edges of the crack are full thickness and square, the material may be brittle and no good. Composition and forming have to be just right for tubing to have good strength & ductility. There shouldn't be a time limit if its a raw material error - factory should stand behind it.

The new frame has no holes in it either. That is why Kubota is telling me to drill drainholes in the bottom so it doesn't happen again. The 850.00 is what Kubota gave me towards a new frame at 2,444.00. I have to install it.

There was obviously enuf "hole" to allow air to pass back and forth.... Altho one would expect internal condensation to self limit as the air moved in and out in response to temperature changes. However, maybe there was a little oil residual on the metal from forming. The resulting oil film floating on the water would favor trapping it inside.
