L35 Valve Clatter

Time for random speculation. I guess it was the hazard sign mounted on the back of the tractor, mine clattered and rattled until I bought ear plugs.
At that time it was a loose fan belt that was slapping the guard. Since then I believe the new clatter is valve clearance needing adjustment. No adjustment has ever been made so I'll see if I can get to top of engine and clutch housing for timing mark. I have the shop manual so it shouldn't be that difficult.

Please keep us posted. I'm curious about what you find. It's time to check the valves on our M59, and I've been putting it off. I don't know why....checking the valves is not difficult. Kind of a relaxing sort of mechanical job. I did buy another valve cover gasket last year. Often they are reusable, but it doesn't hurt to have a spare. The M59 shop manual goes into good detail on valve checking.
Sudden engine noises are sure scary. I did have a sudden clatter from the engine a few years ago. The sound would have panicked me but no sooner did I open the hood to look for it than it went away. Gone as quickly as it began. Near as I can tell from the location the sound was the EGR valve sticking.
