Tractor
deere 770, MF 202 Workbull, Case 350 dozer with 3pt, Ford 9N
Hi Guys! new to the forum

I have appx 300 acres divided amonst two locations and currently am using a Deere 770 for food plot work. I have been thinking of upgrading to a larger tractor. The dealer near me has a 2007 L3400 4x4, geared tranny, with 700 hrs in really great shape, stored inside and basically just used for mowing by an older gentleman, for $8000. It does not have a FEL. It has R1 tires with great tread though do have some mild cracking. Do you feel this is a reasonable price.

Also, do you think this machine will be too light for discing and other ground work?

Thanks a lot

We have two very similar;L3000DT and a L3300 both gear tractors.Great for five foot implements. We use two bottom plows,5ft.roto-tiller and bush hogs,no problem.Worth the money and you should be able to find a FEL for it if needed.After-market or used.

In my opinion, its not a very big jump. The L3400 is nearly the same size as your 770. I've parked my Kubota L2501 (same chassis as the L3400) and 770 next to each other and the only things that stand out are the front axles and loaders.

If you are going to trade your 770, I'd look for a bigger and newer machine. If its an option, think about keeping the 770 as a chore tractor and add a larger utility or farm tractor. With 300 acres you have a lot of land to take care of. Two machines might be a a big help.

A new L2501 with a loader is under $20k I believe. I'm sure it's a good machine, but I'd be looking for a better deal on something without a loader.

Same here. I don't thing the L3400 without a loader is worth $8000. A tractor without a loader is a day without sunshine. A compact tractor without a loader is not much. Also it sounds like it may not be big enough for what you want to do. Not sure how big a disc you want to pull, but discing can take some weight in the tractor and some HP.

We need more information about your ambitions. 300 acres could lend itself to small food plots or serious tillage. You could need a 40hp tractor or a 140hp one based on your future dreams.

I will say that for 8K, open station, no loader you could probably get a nice piece of old iron.

Where are you located? Your rough location can help us narrow things down a lot, and allows us to do basic research on what machines are selling for in your area.

For instance you can get a IH 674 with loader from Messicks in PA for 5,400$. That's a full sized utility tractor. People in some areas would be hard pressed to find the same model for twice the price.

Some L3400 around that year had jerky 3pt hitch also front loader problem.

L3400 will power a 6' PTO-powered Roto-tiller easily. Too light to pull a Disc Harrow effective for primary tillage.

Roto-tillers and Disc Harrows both mix soil. Go with a forward rotation Roto-tiller.

Your ground must be a lot nicer than mine. My 5' tiller taxes my L3200 hard. There is no way I'd have been able to run it with a gear tranny. I had to inch along barely touching the HST go pedal at times. It did the job fine, but had constraints you had to cater to.

You could pull a disc with an economy L, but it would have to be small to maintain the speed you need for discing. You could disc a thousand acres too, but it would take weeks & likely a spare spine or 2. A tiller is a better option & will do a few acres a couple times easily behind an economy L (personal experience). You need a bigger machine to do more than a couple acres a couple times though.

I have a L3700.. basically the same as your 3400 and the newer 3800. ..if I were on 300 acres... I would want a Grand L with a suspension seat.. the 3400 is a great basic, no frills machine that will do almost anything you ask it too.. but more options would make it a more pleasant experience. The loader is a 463 and not terribly strong. I shimmed mine and it now lifts about 1400 pounds including whatever is attached to the SDQA. The 3PH is jerky beyond belief and the turn buckle tensioner are Mickey Mouse. But it's a basic tractor.

FWIW, my L3400 (bought used with 500 hours, no idea what "year" it is) does not have a jerky 3 point. I have a 400lb weight box on it most of the time, and it will go up or down just fine. I has tempted to shim my 463 loader, as well, but IRRC the measured pressure was right at the spec., and I just decided to leave it alone since I seldom max out its lifting ability.
