I just pulled the engine oil dipstick on my new 2800 HST. First off, it looks nothing like the dipstick shown in the operators manual. It has a small hole in the dipstick about 1/4" from the bottom of the stick. Then, there is another hole further up about 2 1/2" from the bottom of the dipstick. My oil level is about 1" above that top hole - about 3 1/2" to 3 3/4" from the bottom of the dipstick. How do I know where the oil level is supposed to be at? There is atleast 2" between the two holes and no other markings. Is it overfilled, and if so, could this have hurt anything?

Flat ground, cold oil, then check again. If you are on flat ground and the oil is cold, then yes it is over-filled. As far as damage goes, probably not.

Yes, flat and cold. So where should the level be? Between the 2 holes?
2 1/4 inches between the two holes seems like a lot of variance. I only have 9 hrs on it. Should I let the dealer know about this? It came this way from the dealer.

Double check the manual but I think this is correct. My oil is between the holes in the dipstick.

The dipstick in the manual looks nothing like mine. The manual shows a dipstick with a square spade type head on the bottom of the dipstick - no holes anywhere.

I called the dealer. It was over filled by 1 quart...unbelievable. I have documented everything incase this leads to a problem down the road.

sorry I didn't give enough info, I thought letting you know it was over-filled would have indicated that the level should be between the two holes. I guess you know now. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. This seems to happen a-lot to vehicles and tractors alike. Keep an eye on things, leaks etc.

I talked with a guy in the sevice department, and he said the top hole on the stick is the full mark and the oil level should not be any higher. Are these filled at the factory or at the dealership. I would think they are filled at the factory since the engine must be tested. I guess somewhere along the line, someone forgot how to count.

My oil level is close to the top hole, and has been since I bought it. It now has 46 hrs on it. Overfill is not a good thing but better than not enough oil.

The dipstick on my L4400 was also nothing like the one in the manual. Very confusing.
