In 1st gear low I have no problems with hills but if I move into the higher gears and try to go up even small incline it comes to a stop. PT works fine, bucket and 3 pt work fine, 4wd works fine.

Worn out clutch or is there an adjustment? This is a 2004 model.

When it comes to a stop are you implying the engine continues to rev? If so, it sounds like the clutch is slipping, but I would expect that you should smell the clutch burning. If no smell perhaps the clutch is oil contaminated due to a bad rear main seal.

Looking at the parts diagram (see attachment, part highlighted) there is an adjustment but can't give you specifics on how it should be adjusted. With any luck that is all it is.

Did you check the clutch housing plug with the small pin in it? Push up on the pin and see if any fluids come out.

Good luck

Hi, thanks for the replies.

The tractor does not turn off when going up an incline it just comes to a stop or a very slow crawl. I have to put it in 1st low in order to climb the incline. If I am on a flat surface I can drive using all gears. There does appear to be more play in the pedal than the 3/4" I have read about. I did not get a chance to adjust it yesterday.

I don't smell clutch burn. I have smelled it in the past when moving heavy dirt and changing from 1 gear to another.

"If" I end up replacing the clutch what kinda of cost am I looking at? I have plenty of experience replacing clutches in cars but not sure I have the equipment needed to separate the front from the rear.

Thanks
WW
