So, i have decided to build a 3pt skidding winch to go with my L2501. After some research i have decided to go hydraulic vs pto. Mainly because with the 20000 lb braden winch i have, there would be no way to release the drum if the log gets stuck or caught in a rock or stump. So i don't have rear remote only a true 3rd function valve to the front which is for a future snow plow. I am thinking that i can feed a hydraulic motor from that valve to run my winch. The winch i have has a 21:1 gear reduction.
My tractor has 5.15 gpm and 3.13 gpm for steering, so my question is does these add up when i'm not using the steering or not?
Do you think my tractor's hydraulics would be capable of running a motor to run the winch?

Sorry;don't think it will work.PTO powered makes more sense. You don't have anywhere what you need for flow to drive a hydraulic motor.

I don't think the flows would add, they're probably separate. You would get about 5 hp from a motor. You could drive a winch with that, but it would be kind of slow compared to pto driven. 5 hp would pull 6000 lbs 27 feet per minute, assuming the winch was 100% efficient, which it isn't.

Okay, so if i go pto and the winch becomes caught on a root of something. What will happen with the tractor. Im assuming it will stall? Is it going to break something inside the tractor? Becuase it should be able to withstand putting full hp out without breaking?

The pto winches have a clutch, but I don't know if they're set up so they can slip. Probably somebody who has one will tell you what happens when they hit something solid. Maybe a person could rig up a hyd motor to turn the winch backwards to release a jam. Lots of people with experience with them here, but they're probably watching the Indy 500.

Thought I would post a couple pics of my $16 hyd logging winch.winch 1.jpgwinch 2.jpg
The winch is a 8000lb off a mechanic boom I got in a trade a couple years ago. It came with about 125ft of that blue rope. The 4ft scrape blade I got gave to me. The blade had been turned backwards and welded. I had the hyd hoses and only had to buy the QC's. I spent more time thinking about how to put it together than it took to build it. Just threw the winch on top of the blade and welded in place. The fairlead is a little small, but it came with the winch. I have stalled the winch a couple of times, which is really a good thing. It wont hurt the tractor and didnt break the rope. I have a bigger hyd motor I thought about putting on it to give it a little more grunt, but aint made up my mind about that. I do have to wind the rope off as it is power off/on only, but it winches fast enough for me.

The winch is driven by a clutch. If you hit something it will stop, and either the clutch will slip or it will pull the tractor backwards. The advantage of a 3 PTH winch is that it's much faster, rather than 27 feet per minute mine pulls about 180 feet in that time. That's quite a difference in work capacity over the course of a day.

This winch has a positive dog clutch, not slipping. So i guess the tractor will goes backwards or stall.

I was referring to a pto winch as per the question, I don't know anything about what you have. However, based on what you describe I wouldn't use it for safety reasons; what's going to happen if the log snags up and you are inadvertently in the way?
