L2500 Air Intake?

About time I pulled this thread over here into <font color=orange>orange</font color=orange> territory. This is actually a reply to your last post in the "<font color=green>Check it out</font color=green>" thread.

Your air cleaner system looks identical to mine, except for the size, location, position, design and general layout. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Now that I see the intake pipe that you're talking about, I think I can pretty safely say there ain't no such animal on my tractor. Of course, I can't pop the top off my engine compartment as easily as you apparently can, so I've just been peeking in from the sides so far. This weekend (I'm already counting the hours) I'll climb inside if I have to, just to settle this thing once and for all.

There's even the remote possibility that I might take a picture or two. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

In the mean time, maybe some of our other 2500 owners know the answer. Rodneyd, Jeff_In_NC, Gerard, P.K.Burke, others? Where the heck is our air intake?

Harv, when you "fill" up the orange forum... tell me you're not going over to blue and start over... are you?

Back to basics... What does an "air filter" do? Where is it located on your tractor? Take a deep breath... that "rubber nose", "dust unloader valve" and all the above with the slot is where the "air" starts coming in.

I don't bet... but I'll bet you a cold Pepsi that's it, Harv & Bird!

Well, John, it ain't worth arguing about, but that little flat rubber "evacuator valve" ain't big enough to let enough air in to run an engine. That's why it's got that other big air intake. I know manuals can have misprints, but I'm convinced Kubota is right this time about what it's for.

Golly, Fellers!

I'm getting conflicting input from intelligent, experienced tractor folks, none of whom give me any reason for doubt. And here I am in the middle, just bristling with ignorance. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

That evacuator/unloader/nose thingy certainly seems to me to be too small and built wrong for sucking air, but so far I don't see any other inlet, either.

Bird, my manuals "imply" that it's for letting dust out, but the only verbage I can find just says to keep it cleaned out. I now have the operator's manual, the parts list, and the workshop manual, but none of them really shed much light on this subject.

In fact, I've attached the excerpt from the operator's manual which is the only mention I can find on the subject. My new mega-dollar workshop manual has the exact same diagram and text -- a little disappointing. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I just sent an email to the only local Kubota mechanic I know to see if he can shed any light on this. I'm starting to think that 2500's just hold their breath. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Harv, You had fantastic pictures of the Front, the back, the side....

Except the BOTTOM! There it is... the big round opening under the air filter canister... the air intake!

Here's how my brand spanking new <font color=green> John Deere Tech. Manual </font color=green> explains the theory:

Air Intake System Theory of Operation:

Air enters through grille panels to air cleaner intake located in air cleaner housing. Air is then directed around primary element in a circular motion, throwing larger particles to the unloader valve. Air is then drawn through a secondary element through hose before entering the cylinder head.

An electronic air filter restriction indicator is located at air cleaner outlet to indicate clogged or restricted air cleaner elements. An indicator in dash will light when restricted.

An electric manifold heater (if equipped) warms intake air, by heating coils or metal strips as air passes through them, to aid in cold starting.

(a picture is shown in the manual, pointing at the various elements, showing a large round air intake opening at the bottom of the air canister {opposite end of unloader valve}) I'll try to scan the picture later today.

Excuse me now while I get all this "egg" off my entire face.

Harv, I think you're on to something there. Looks like an inlet on the bottom of the main canister. I was going to get real fancy and mark up your .gif but I'm not that talented apparently.

And here we go with the mixing colors again...

Mystery solved, Harv./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Now you can see in the intake on the bottom of the cannister. I do wonder if it doesn't have a hose or tube attached that leads to some place where it can suck relatively clean, cool air in.

And John, we don't have that indicator to tell us the air filter's dirty like you have, or the inlet air heater. I didn't know your tractor had those, but a neighbor's old (1972?) Oliver has both of them (and no glow plugs). I was really surprised the first time I saw that.
