Hello all, I am writing to find some info on an engine rebuild. My L 175 went under in hurrican Katrina in S. Louisiana, my father has owned it since new in 75. I got her running again a week after the storm but now 10 months later she is fading fast, i have noticed a drop in power and she smokes when under a load, never used to unless a severe load now she smokes when cutting tall grass with a woods RM59. We really only use her to cut grass and pull some trees around now. Any ideas on how much it migh cost to rebuild? I am versed in gasoline engines but have never fooled with a diesel yet.
Thank you,
Loring

Check the simple stuff first. Loss of power and black smoke sounds like it may not be getting enough air. Check the air filters.

Good luck,

Gary

Don't forget to check the brakes to make sure that they are not locked up. Brake cover plates really simple to remove for inspection.

Welcome to TBN… I see this is your first post. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
You have a 30+ year tractor so if it needs some attention, that is probably ok.
You might start with easier things that you will want to check or repair anyway. Remove the injectors and injector pump to have them tested/rebuilt as needed. Moisture can foul up the pump & injectors. Also you may have a lot of hours on the engine and many gallons of fuel through the system.
If you do rebuild the engine you will want to have freshened injectors and pump anyway. So do that first it may let you go another 10 to 30 years before you need to do the engine.

To address your question about cost, check with your dealer or Tractor Smart for rebuild parts cost. Rings gasket sets and valves are expensive but then so is a new tractor.
In any case if you have done it with gas engines… you can do a diesel engine.
What ever you do, post back and let everyone know how it is going… with pictures if you can /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. KennyV.

Do all the simple stuff. Change all fluids and filters, lubricate anything and everything. Adjust anything you can adjust. You may have already done this, but just a suggestion.

I recently had to do some work on my L175- never touched a desiel before- hadn't really worked alot on gassers either- I didn't get into major stuff, but had to pull the head. It really isn't that complicated- I would get a manual for spec's and such. I agree with the other posts- try the simple stuff first. I was amazed how much better mine ran after the little bit of work I did. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

Good luck!
