I was using my mini-ex to flatten out the ruts in my neighbor’s driveway left behind by mud season when the engine stumbled and - before I could coax it off the traveled drive - it died. I cycled the key and got the clicking sound of an air-bound fuel pump. Looked under the hood and saw one connector had popped out of the pump. There was a bit of diesel sprayed on and under the engine cover, but not on any hot surfaces. I pushed it back into place, felt a faint click, and once the system was purged of air the engine fired right up and ran normally.

But why would it pop out? Are connectors something that should be replaced periodically?

It's white metal the vibration will cause them to work lose they are just pressed in to begin with. You could clean it off good and use some JB weld to hold it back in.
