Backhoe Kwickjaw Log splitter

Anyone seen this before? Was wondering if something like it might work on my Woods 6500 backhoe? Might want to set it up for only a single split not a double, like in the video.... Seems pretty simple to set up..

Sure looks like it would be nice for the big heavy pieces. Not sure how economical it would be to run a backhoe for splitting smaller pieces though.

I suppose if you lived somewhere where that big of firewood tree is normal, it'd be worth having.

Yep it is too bad they don't sell it anywhere... It looked like a simple but good idea, as I wanted to build a splitter for my backhoe. It also gave me some ideas on how I might be able to do the same thing with some parts I have around the house... After spending 3 or 4 hours using a normal splitter this last weekend (borrowed from a friend), it sure would be nice to not handle the rounds and just sit on the backhoe.. :^)

I might make some progress on my idea this weekend and will post some shots of what I do, if it works... :^)

I would be very interested in seeing how it turns out. I wish I had some skill to build one, seems like for the cost and effort used to do it the "old fashioned" way IE: log splitter with tractor hydro, or even with PTO pump or separately powered the cost just for that setup versus, if you didn't need your BH bucket during wood splitting season, makes this idea worth considering, especially when you can split fire wood by siting on the BH instead of moving splitting, piling, etc.
If it turns out your can make something like that for under a few hundred.
I didn't see any patents or anything liek that, so I'm not sure this guy can actually get anyone interseted in "continuing" the manufacturing he has stopped.
Wonder what he was chargin for completed units?

It is a shame that its not available. I liked that it would lift the round into the truck, then split it - saves a load of back work. Also, the video shows how larger rounds were split - my Ponderosa pine will get up to 42" on the butt. It IS a real challenge rolling a big round up onto a conventional splitter.

yeah I bought my tractor basically b/c I'm getting too old to bend over and pick up firewood. This thing seems too good to be true, can't understand why it didn't catch fire?
They must have wanted way too much $$$.

The interesting thing will be if the curl on my BH bucket has enough power to make it worth while. It is only a 2 1/2 in cylinder (I think that is around 5 ton worth of force).... Originally I was thinking of building one with a cylinder that would replace the bucket, but I saw this yesterday and it got me thinking a different path. I was suprised after searching on here that no body else had seen it (at least that I could find).

The more I watch that video, I wonder, is somebody off camera - setting up those rounds so the splitter picks them up so squarely & nicely each time. I'm wondering if off camera set up is there or does the unit pick the round off the pile, set it down and then pick it up again squarely & nicely. I know for certain that all the rounds in a pile of rounds will not be positioned so that they can be picked up perfectly like shown in the video. And it does not appear that the splitting head is on an articulating gimbal.

I am very interested. I think there is some leverage at work in that original design. I would agree a whimpy 5 ton piston isn't by itself enough to crack a large round.
So Using a longer arm that pivots might be what the doctor ordered...
can't wait to see what you come up with?

I am also interested in the grapple effect of this attachment.

yeah that does seem suspicious, None of my logs are lined up nicely in my pile like that ever. Interesting addition to the design, mounting the splitter on something that can rotate. Good thinkin there.

I was able to complete this splitter , my thoughts on it

i have a late 70's John Deere 300B Backhoe so it's old and alittle tired ,
if you have bigger machines or newer then you maybe more happy with the outcome
of building a splitter like this for your machine .

as a log grapple it works out great was able to pick up a 12 ft x 24 " log no problem
as a splitter it will split you have to do alittle by trial before you can get the hang of it to start splitting wood .
if you have 2 people doing the splitting it should go good but as a 1 man operation you bust the logs open and they fly apart
then you have to move them around to be split again , i just had the main beam to split maybe if i had a 4way wedge it might of done better
who knows , for me i will run a splitter off of the machine with quick connects as i have a splittter i built for the bobcat that sets now since
i traded my bobcat for the JD backhoe , anyway i will post some pictures of it .

That looks like an order specially made for 4shorts, could probably offer it chrome plated.

No I sure wish I did though, It's getting thick into the splitting season, and I think it's gonna be a long cold one, even way down here int he South.
