Yes the John Deere tractors are still steam driven, and as steam driven tractors go, they are very well made, but the Japanese and Korean tractor manufactures have long ago progressed on to the diesel engine for their machines.:D:m1helmet:

It's kind hard to follow this thread because people keep flipping between the theoretical, and the practical.

From a pure theoretical perspective, you would always want the highest horsepower engine, knowing that by gearing, you could get whatever torque and speed that you needed for the application. Does anybody debate that?

From a practical standpoint, transmissions have to be reasonably sized, with a reasonable number of gears.

No argument from me on your theoretical statement. Precisely what I been saying.

Also no debate from me on the practical point. It wasn't me who started in with extreme examples.

Again: the discussion got started about what is more important when tractor shopping. And I thin we can all agree that if one is shipping for a tractor, they aren't going to have 15k rpm motors like a motorcycle. Tractor engines are already built with low-end torque and longevity in mind. It boils down to selecting HP.

Kioti is a fine tractor at 200hrs. At 800, 1000hrs they will start to fall apart. I have had two friends witht them, one the engine threw a rod at 350hrs, the other had the transmission bust, mowing his lawn! Thats not quality. After 5 years, then you will see why people buy John Deere, Kubota, CNH/Ls. They hold up. IF well maintained they will still run like new. A kioti no matter how well maintained and taken care of will start to fall apart after a few hundred hours.

So that's it? Should we just trust you on that, or do you want to add some anecdotal evidence?

Ill try to give as much as possible ;) A have had a few friends with kioti's. I grew up on a farm, and a lot of my family are farmers. We run tractors for long times, and we run them hard (well maintained though). Everything from 24hp to 360hp. The John Deeres have stood up the best. I have a small horse farm now, and do landscaping. My John Deere 2320 has done everything I have ever asked it too do and I have a done A Lot with it. Restored a house, built stone walls, walk ways, dug trenches, removed stumps etc. It has a better power to weight ratio, then my old mini excavator a Bobcat 335. The kiotis my friends have had have tried to do the same work, have done it, and then the tractors died. I would rather pay more, for a machine that I will have to pay less for service, and will give 10+ years of service.

My previous tractor was a John Deere 850. Owned it for 15 years.
My current tractor is a a Kioti DK 35. I have owned it for 13 years and 1835+ hours. Still runs and works like new.
My Kioti DK has been every bit as well build, solid and reliable as my John Deere.

Just bend over, open your wallet, and let them take what they want, they count on that

I'd be willing to bet your machine came with a "Tool Holder"...in the form of a seatbelt....

Well I be. I guess My 233 hour Dk, it about to fall apart in the middle huh?.. Skating on thin ice and all? I used it all day today..but maybe I need to make it last what little life it has left?..I laugh in your general direction.

Crap, mine is over half wore out at 119hrs...You are just screwed, you are on borrowed time my friend.

Nor does it involve work. Accomplishing work is what we are talking about in the thread - starting with debunking your claim that a generic hi HP engine would not accomplish the work of a lower HP engine having hi torque output. Horsepower requires force and movement. It does not require torque. Torque is a construct of force, a lever, and a pivot. HP defines force and rate of movement.
larry

This is completely wrong, but pretty funny.

So, "Horsepower requires force and movement" is your position? Okay, let's go with that. Evidently you don't realize that the "force" you mention in the horsepower formula IS torque.

The definition of horsepower is torque multiplied by RPM, divided by the constant of 5252. If there is zero torque, there is zero horsepower. Horsepower doesn't define anything else in the equation, it is defined by the variables of torque and rpm.

For folks that want to understand the actual math/physics involved, this is a pretty good summary with actual formulas, not inaccurate theories.

Power and Torque: Understanding the Relationship Between the Two, by EPI Inc.
Wrong again. Torque does no work. HP gives you a handle on the combinations of force and speed you can achieve. The whole story in one value.
...I took a look at your link. I didnt need it since I know that stuff. "Actual formulas" are not necessary if you understand Energy, Power, and Time and know the E/T equivalent - formulas can make you think you understand cuz you can plug into and get the answer without the proper grounding in concepts. Looks like they were going thru the pertinent points tho. If you have read it, you have not understood it. ... You really need to go talk to a horse.

So DK35vince with his 13 years and 1800+ hours is like "dead man walking"?:D

That things gotta be like the Beverly Hillbilly's ride if you go by the Toolbox's formula.;)

I am thinking my DK35se is still going to be running when I am pushing up daises. How ever long that is going to be. You know he didn't say, but I bet he thinks Kubota's are a POS also. I swear some of these JD guys have a "thing" going on.

Its still working like new.
If my John Deere was better, someone would need to point out to me where it was a better built machine because I don't see it.

I have noticed that....wierd.... and stupid:thumbsup:

Maybe he just said that to see if he could get a "rise" out of us Kioti owners.. Yeah, that's the ticket.:)
