Say you put a valve that was rated at 5GPM on a machine that's pump was rated at 10GPM, you could have a restriction in the hydraulic circuit the could cause overheating.

Question on this; is the GPM rating of a valve related to the supply through the spool to the work ports or from the supply through the OC to the power beyond or both? I was always under the impression it was related to the work ports for a couple of reasons; the work ports are usually quite a bit smaller and half of applications are closed center systems where GPM 'through' the valve would be meaningless.

Both. However, I don't quite understand your comment that "half of applications are closed center systems". Just about every tractor and piece of heavy equipment that I know of has open center hydraulic systems.
