Kubota Diesel L1500
We inherited this tractor from my father...we can get it to turn over, however, not to fully crank. I am trying to find a repair manual for this. I have been unsuccessful. Also, any suggestions would be great. We were using it the other week, but were having to pull it off to get it to crank, then while mowing/bushogging the property...it just flat out stopped on us...now, it will turn and the fan and belt turn, and it'll do the smoke thing for the diesel, however, it won't finish turning over and cranking....we have also even tried to jump start it and that does not make any difference. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Also, any ideas on how old this tractor is?

I have an L1501 in Australia. These are Grey mMarket tractors, not originally sold in Australia or the US, and a lot of people treat you like dirt when you say you have one !!

But then again lots are helpfull too.

Mine is about 20-30 years old and I understand the L1500 is older again. They are similar but your has only 8 forward gears and different hydraulics etc.

Try looking at your diesel lines. Mine did that when I changed the fuel filter, and had to bleed air from the line. There is a big nut at the fuel pump I think.

You should get some more help here so just keep trying.

Manuals etc. are not easy to come by. I have just order some but they for for slightly different tractors but most things are the same. Not sure about the L1500.

The L1500 is a grey market tractor. They are very similar to the L185 ,sharing similar engines etc. The L185 manual should be enough for any mechanic to repair the unit. This manual should still be available at your local dealer.

Not sure about the problem you describe. If the fan and fan belt turn it indicates it is cranking OK. A major cause of hard starting,or not starting, are burnt out glow plugs .

However as you state the tractor stopped in the middle of a job, it could be fuel starvation, blockage in the tank etc. We have seen some of these with so much dirt or water in the fuel tank, the tanks had to be removed and properly cleaned.

If the tractor was hot when it stopped suddenly, there is the chance it overheated and siezed, causing it to stop.If this happened the pistons are probably scored and it becomes a repair job for the experts. The radiator must be kept clean especially when bush hogging as a lot of the small grass bits end up in the front of the radiator and it will overheat easily.
Also if it overheats they are a bit prone to cracking the cylinder head, allowing water to enter the cylinder. That would prevent the engine from cranking over, but it would crank some of the way, without turning a full revolution on the engine.

Its probably time to get a mechanic to diagnose it properly for you, but if you provide more information we'll try to help you.

I think the L1500 was current in the late 70's and early 80's so its at least 20 years old. That in itself is no problem as many of these are still doing good work for their owners.
Hope this helps.
